Chapter 3: No Grave Can Hold My Body Down

The knock at the door wasn’t frantic like a neighbor’s, or soft like Zoe’s when she forgot her keys. It was the kind of knock that already carried bad news in its weight. You knew before you even opened it.

Your pulse pounded. “Where’s my wife?” you asked the second you saw the people at your door.

The pause was long enough to confirm your worst fears.

When Tim Bradford, Talia Bishop, and Angela Lopez appeared in your doorway a few minutes past the end of Zoe’s shift with the red and blue lights of their shop cars flashing behind them, you knew in an instant where this night was going.

If the TOs had made bets about you, the rookies, or at least Nolan and Chen, tried to decipher the puzzle that was you.

“I don’t get it,” Nolan said for the nth time. “She’s warm, approachable, kind, and her wife is…”

For him, their captain was the sort of leader who made his late-life rookie disaster feel less like a joke. But you? You were the type that would haze him just like Grey would do. He had tried to welcome you once, offering a firm handshake and his best smile. The memory of how fast you shut him down still made his ears burn.

“A thunderstorm,” Chen finished for him. “The scary kind at freezing temperature with hail and lots of lightning.”

She placed the ice pack gently on a corner of the desk where the condensation wouldn’t reach her paperwork, and stepped around with her hands raised like you were a spooked animal she’s approaching. “It wasn’t as bad as it sounded.” “You have a black eye the size of Texas, sunshine. Don’t you dare downplay this.” Her lips twitched like she was fighting from grinning. “What, doesn’t it make me look pretty badass? Kinda hot, right?” Your eyes only narrowed further as you folded your arms across your chest.

Or, Captain Zoe Andersen was all-in. One choice to ride patrol brings you face to face with every fear you’ve carried for her. Nothing was gonna stop her from staying a cop. You hated the system, hated the risk, but you never stopped loving her all your life.
