US vs UK: Round One - TV casts
As I tend to do, I’ve been comparing British shows vs US ones; in this case, specifically the correspondence between cast size and characterization. I think there’s something of a difference between our two fair lands’ TV shows. It seems to me that King Arthur’s realm crafts more dramas and comedies that have tighter, smaller casts; fewer characters to fuck up, which hopefully makes for better development of them. Luther, Sherlock, The Hour, Dr Who, Absolutely Fabulous, Spaced, Coupling, Black Books, and The IT Crowd are shows developed in this vein. I can’t say that this is the best sample (surprise! I’m not a scientist!) but this is a pretty damn good cache of TV. It may also be that as a woman, I am drawn to shows that deal closely in relationships; the observant among you will recognize that these shows are pretty specifically about tight bonds. But I also look for excellent writing and wit. All of the above offer this as well.
On the flip side, I had a hard time thinking of US shows that exist in a universe made up of a few main characters. The X-Files and Louie do, but Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, etc. (notice the dominance of cable shows) are all built on large, diverse casts. In the case of The X-Files, the show went downhill when additional characters and convoluted story-arcs drew attention away from the core, re: Mulder and Scully. Examples of a large cast working outside traditional drama: The Simpsons, Community, Arrested Development and soap operas…you know…if you’re in to those. Again, writing is key: the structure will fall apart and the show suffers when characters are under-developed and boring and unfunny. Unless you’re Two and a Half Men; apparently, shitty writing is the capstone there.
