#bunhill fields

bunhill fields is a burial ground in the london borough of islington. it is not consecrated ground, and was the preferred resting place of religious nonconformists during its operation. the name is derived from “bone hill,” which refers to the possible deposition of thousands of dried bones on the site, covered with soil and forming a morbid hill. it is home to many famous graves, including john bunyan.

Supposedly the name is derived from “Bone Hill”, referring to the fact that the marshland that was once here was made stable by having bones from the charnel house of St Pauls dumped into it in the 16th century.

The 17th century saw some of the land put to use as a burial ground for plague victims. However, the ground was left non-consecrated, and soon the graveyard became a popular last resting place for the dissenters of the era – those who disagreed with the Church of England – and other denominations who could afford a plot.

Today the cemetery is one of those small patches of green amongst the grey city; on weekday lunchtimes it is likely filled with city bankers, though at the weekend I found the main inhabitants to be plump squirrels and pigeons, scratching their way between the graves of such notable figures as Daniel DeFoe, John Bunyan, and William Blake.

Cool, cloudy day visit to The Museum of Methodism & John Wesley's House! Plus Bunhill Fields. 

The Museum of Methodism is in the basement center of the complex which include’s John Wesley’s house and a chapel. You have to go with a guide through the house, and the waiting area is also the museum. The floor of the waiting area/museum was made of gravestones that had been in a graveyard on this site. It had a lot of really interesting artifacts, and also video testimonials from people currently in the Methodist church. I knew pretty much nothing about Methodism so I thought it was really interesting!
