Some Dogs Think Their Name is No: Chapter 20, âtwin strangersâ Behind the Text Commentary! (spoilers!!)
1. cot3 book nibbles
due to the nature of the fic, itâs rare to have a chance to incorporate the little book details that i love so much. the dynamic between cot3 is much different but some things never change (autistic George and the biscuit rule)
2. the L word ???
and itâs not lesbian or loser for once. Lockwood has alluded to loving Lucy before but itâs only recently that the word itself is entering his internal monologue. if you asked him if he has romantic feelings for Lucy, heâd probably say no without it being a lie. what he feels exceeds the dimensions of romance, itâs not âlike,â not even really âlove,â but somewhere closer to âneed.â i do write Locklyle as both being on the asexual spectrum, and really enjoy getting to explore deep, cosmic love outside of traditional allosexuality. still, the word is a big step. codependency anyone?
3. going Mary Cotton
Mary Cotton was a british serial killer convicted for poisoning her family members for the insurance payout. Neely would probably consider her a personal inspiration.
*unrelated but her PRETTY FACE? down bad. baddd
4. the looking glass
i used to feel bad for having so many important HAUNTED OBJECTS to keep track of but then i remembered thatâs kind of the whole premise of the source material. one can NEVER enough mcguffins. i based my description of the looking glass to the Other Side on this antique victorian mirror, seen here edited to better resemble what it might look like if you had the misfortune of peering through it (sorry in advance about the loss of your eyeballs).
5. twin strangers
'twin strangers' as the chapter title comes from an emerging term for doppelgänger, a supernatural double with an adjacent folkloric background to fetches. the most obvious manifestation of this concept is Lockwood seeing the Fetch in the looking-glass, which has taken on his appearance.
on a less literal level, the second 'twin stranger' in the chapter is the mysterious American, someone Lockwood recognizes as being a former shadow agent like himself despite not knowing his name. the American represents an alternate version of a grown-up Lockwoodâa former child prodigy trafficked into Rotwell, but one who chose to climb the ladder and accept his protection, money, and amorality to survive.
while it seems difficult to picture Lockwood ending up that way, itâs important to consider that him ending up in Rotwell at all was due to a highly specific combination of tragic circumstancesâupper class white kids arenât usually the ones being trafficked; itâs the poor, the systematically marginalized. Rotwellâs treatment of Lockwood has everything to do with class. the very first time they meet, Rotwell tells him he âshould be in uniform,â and later at Tendy House âif I didnât know you, Iâd think you were on the guest list,â extending a level of respect (albeit purposefully condescending) and indulgence of his behavior that would never be extended to someone like Kat or Neely. thus the question of how and why the American decided his best version of the future was to become what he hated is one that requires interrogation of his material conditions of suffering, and how victims become perpetrators.
anyways, the American will return in SOME DOGS THINK THEIR NAME IS NO Volume II, The Onâ
