I actually forgot this tiny detail:
Now that it is confirmed that this intruder is indeed Chuuya, does it mean Fyodor sent for Chuuya before/at the same time Gogol (and Sigma) entered the scene?
So, was Fyodor trying to escape prison independent of Gogol or are all of them involved in his plan?
(*brings out the three scenario flowchart again*)
1] Gogol turned against Fyodor in the last minute and Fyodor realized this only after the duo arrived at the prison: his face of absolute confusion makes sense then lol yeah if this is the case, then Fyodor is screwed high-time.Â
Going by what the story tells me (and not reading too much between the lines) plus assuming that Fyodor didnât know of Gogolâs escape during Wretched Chair Arc and that he was making independent plans to escape prison using Chuuya, ig Gogol popping up out of nowhere and throwing him a curveball like this must have thrown a big wrench into his plans, right? Either way, why did he bring in Chuuya, of all people? Just so he can flaunt his escape plan before Dazai--see, see, itâs your ex-partner! He has come to my rescue, not yours XP
or, as Ranpo says: (yeah I added this panel just bc he looks pretty here)
2] Gogol is still working as per Fyodorâs plan:Â in that case, Dazai is screwed lol
Because itâd mean Fyodor has moved all his important pieces to where he is--the prison. Why? The only reason I can see:Â they want to eliminate Dazai. No one in their enemy side is as much of a formidable opponent as Dazai. Ranpo is highly intelligent but as we saw through various occasions, Fyodor can easily beat him. No, the only thorn in their side is Dazai and they must have made this elaborate plan to trap him.
ETA: Oh, and I might be seeing too much into this panel but I still can't tell if this was a mere coincidence or a cue for Gogol to start his part of the plan.
No wonder, Dazai immediately chose the one guy on their side who was questioning his existence.
I still do believe that one reason he chose Sigma is because he can use him in some way to force Fyodor to make an impossible choice but thatâs just my self-indulgent theory and I donât have enough proof to back it up.
As to how Dazai is gonna use Sigma for now? My guess: he is gonna apply his logic from this panel:
(Aaannd, it is already working for him lol)Â
Bet he is gonna get the brunt of the prison break done by Sigma. He will dance around, waste his time until Sigma gets fed up and starts to walk through the death traps one by one and then, Dazai can simply waltz along hah
Also, there are lot of doubts if the antidote is the real poison; wonder if he will make Sigma test it out on himself first and if thatâs how he forces Fyodor to show his hand I Will Scream. Okay, but now I am giving ideas to the author so I will stop lol.
3] Gogol is here only for shits and giggles and oh, to learn important life lessons through live examples (this is a crude explanation, but if you want to know what I am talking about this post explains it nicely)
In this case, everyone except Gogol is screwed (jk)
Or, to put it simply, the game is really left to Fate (as Gogol wants) and whichever team-up has the slightest edge over the other will win. Time only can tell.
So I say, but if anything happens to Sigma or Chuuya, time will tell how the fourth wall was mysteriously broken and two of the greatest masterminds in history were mysteriously shot dead with a bullet to their skulls
Well, whatever be the case, I can easily predict no matter what, Dazai will be the one to escape in any of the three scenarios (to move the plot forward assuming this isnât the last arc)
Thoughts on Ango and Dazai
Many a spoiler, up to chapter 95
Did I talk about Ango already today BECAUSE IâM GONNA AGAIN!
Ah, Ango Sakaguchi, Port Mafiaâs sad boy (he is, and you canât prove me wrong), triple agent, informant, and, of course, Dazai's... frenemy? To everyone in the PM, but especially to Dazai, Ango's actions must feel like a double betrayal. Yet, I have a theory that Dazai might have already forgiven Ango, despite what the quite poignant rhetorical question of his would suggest otherwise.
I actually half seriously think (and in the spirit of chapter 95, too), that Ango misses his times at the PM. He misses is friends, and he hates the role he played in Odaâs death. His dedication to his work has been established so early in his life that there isnât anything that can really replace it for him (no proof just me doing jibber jabber). It doesnât mean, however, that the consequences of his actions donât hurt him, or that he doesnât fell shame and regret.
Maybe since childhood his value has been placed only on academic prowess and not on personal relationships.
I think he learned to prioritize his work and intellectual development above all else. His perception of friendship is that it is, too, a distraction, and his work is more important. Yet his desire to rid himself of the sense of guilt is more than just THAT.
I felt deeply Ango's deal with Chuuya in Dead Apple, when the former basically exchanged his own life for latter's cooperation (even though Chuuya would never collect such a debt, but that's a topic for a diff post). Ango's self-worth, in my opinion, stems from his value to the others around him. The Japanese Gov-t takes precendent, but not without a high cost - Oda's life and Dazai's friendship.Â
It's no coincidence, too, that it was the three of them, and not just Dazai and Oda. Ango is a balance for the two of them, a grounded medium between the two.
A side-ish note, but the few times when we see Dazai act impulsively or at least following his own emotions is when it comes to his friends. First thing that jumped out to me is that Dazai let Ango go (Dark Era). The whole "Did you really think you would leave here alive?" and then five minutes later "leave before I change my mind". Dazai is conflicted, and for a good reason -Ango, much like Oda, is his friend.
Then the ordeal with the car. It is ~technically~ unclear why there was a car accident, but I think, even basing just on the manga, it is ~relatively~ safe to assume that Dazai had something to do with it. Somebody expressed their opinion earlier by replying to one of my Ango hcs, that Dazai didn't want to kill Ango in that instance. I actually agree with that. I think he still is acting on, if not impulse, but at least emotion, when it comes to his friend. Dazai is manipulative, yes, but there are no bullets in Ango's gun that Dazai grabs. Sakaguchi KNOWS what Dazai will do, or at least try to do... and he gets in the car anyway. Moreover, I think Dazai knows that Ango can predict his moves as well, and that's why we see his terrified face seconds before the accident (ofc, it is also a normal human reaction that I doubt even Dazai would be able to control). Maybe in that instance, Dazai realizes the depth of Ango's shame.
In the later BSD chapters Ango and Dazai are working together again, and as much as it would be out if necessity for Dazai, the chapter 95 demonstrates Ango's devotion to his friend. Not only does he betray the gov-t in order to stop Fukuchi, and potentially detail his career, his future (did he mention death sentence?), Ango doesn't even know if it will work out. "Are you laughing?", he asks Dazai's photo, as if he already knows that he would, at the absurdity of Sakaguchi Ango finally acting not out of sense of duty, but on his emotions too.
Nikolai Gogol: *exists*Â
Fyodor:Â
*brain empty only.....*Â
In continuation to my previous post about the prison break arc, I think I figured out one possible candidate for Fyodorâs Queen--Â Nikolai Gogol (fyolai! haha but no I donât mean in the shipping sense here)Â
Honestly, when Dazai and Fyodor started the game of chess I imagined they meant it figuratively as in to judge which one of their associates is the most powerful, most intelligent, most trusted etc. etc. (For example, how Roy Mustang assigned the positions to his subordinates?)Â
But no lolâthey meant it literallyâthey were really playing a game of chess using people as their chess pieces; I canât with these monsters (affectionate)â Why I am saying this is because then, we can throw out their personal attachments to the people (pieces) (if any) and treat this purely as a game of chess. Very interesting and so like them too!
Oh, btw, there is this big brain post from twitter that beautifully explains the whole game of chess between Dazai and Fyodor complete with chessboard images if you wanna check it out.

I donât know why but this panel is too funny for me:Â
This is the face of a man who has no idea what he is getting into but he has to put up an impression that he-knows-everything coz thatâs how he rolls; this is the fakest smile I have ever seen from him lol please itâs literally a pained smile just a bit better than Sigma who doesnât even pretend to hide his discomfort like
At this point, Sigma has given up trying to cover his I-am-so-done-with-Gogol-I-have-been-dealing-with-his-bs-for-the-last-fifteen-chapters-somebody-HELP face (he has dark circles now, for crying out loud) and Dazai is obviously very new to all this
Some theories I formed after rereading chapters 95/96 and my brain just wonât let me be so here lol:Â
1. Dazai too wanted to choose the security keycard but couldnât. So, as a counterattack and having realized that Sigma is Fyodorâs ultimate weakness from their earlier conversation, he chose Sigma for the jailbreak escape item (based purely on this big brain post)
2. Contrary to how Dazai transmits his messages via encoded pulse variations to Ango, Fyodor directly controls the minds of his pawns and makes them do his biddings
3. Gogol (and Fyodor) are lying to Sigma about...almost everything
4. Fyodor will betray Fukuchi when no one expects.
Explanations under cut:Â
About Fyodorâs ability Crime and Punishment
So, I was reading a bunch of theories (x, x, x, x, x, x) about his supposed ability and some of the common points I found in them: 1] his ability kills people who feel even the slightest guilt about their actions 2] it doesnât work against other ability users 3] it is activated only by touch and through his hands (doesnât matter if he touches someone or the other way round.) 4] it isnât hindered by protective clothing (gloves etc.) (as we saw in the case of the officer under Ango who died trying to handcuff him) 5] I am not quite sure whether he has control over his ability or it is active all the time but that tooÂ
Now, this panel is very... interesting.Â
It pretty much confirms the second point, doesnât it?Â
Assuming Gogolâs words to Atsushi arenât lies and that he is indeed a sane person who feels remorse over his overly dramatic clown themed murders, he should be dead the moment he touched Fyodorâs hands. Since he didnât, either heâs lying about his conscience or he is aware Fyodorâs ability canât affect other ability users.
I wonder if Fyodor foresaw Gogol jumping up to grab his hands of all things (from his reaction he seems shocked but hard to say with this guy) Say, he does have control over his ability... in this situation heâd probably instinctively activate his ability rather than not lolÂ
And...I get why he is so obsessed in finding the Book. If his ability could kill anyone with a guilty conscience by a single touch, heâd go around the world killing everyone with an ability (who are the greatest sinners according to him) and lastly end his own life I guess? But he canât. His ability canât punish those with the greatest âsinsâ (kinda ironic if you ask me) so he wants to rewrite the world making it free of abilities. Does bring about the question why he so intensely looks upon abilities as crimes and ability users as sinners.
tl;dr: anyway this is the first time we see someone grab his hands and live to tell the tale cause more chaos. Â
