Bsd isn't the best media ever by far but it's permanently eating away at my mind. I couldn't get rid of it if I tried. My favorite character can die a fifth time and I'm still reading like it's the peak of entertainment. It scratches my brain in such an indescribable way. what if early in the agency days one of the missions almost endangers fukuzawa's life and then ranpo gets really protective and worried and tries to go on his cases alone because he's scared something might happen and it takes months for fukuzawa to soothe ranpo's anxiety over it and make him stop trying to put himself between fukuzawa and potential harm (which endangers his own life more than protects fukuzawa's)
then the cannibalism arc happens and ranpo just thinks that he should've known and he's so stupid and how could he have ever left fukuzawa out of his sight?

viktor tsoi is a legend of underground post-punk, in the 80s he was literally the voice of a generation. but i'm not gonna give you a whole history lesson right now, because my goal is just to explain where i found the parallel.
he had his own core values, and based on them, he wrote about the world around him, about its pressing issues. for him, rock music was a perfectly natural and organic form of self-expression. according to him, "only you and your conscience are your chief critic and censor." and this position wasn't something to flaunt. it was something that simply needed to be lived out.
in hard times, largely deceitful and cynical, he was the one who managed to preserve in his art a vibrant life, individuality, a rejection of conformity, and a protest against pseudo-values...
most of his thoughts expressed in interviews were along the lines of:
"all of us changed, and not always for the better. life goes on. but in this process, we have to lose something, to make sacrifices... honestly, we sacrificed too much."
"someone can think of themselves as whoever they like, but that doesn't mean others will see them that way."
if you still don't see the connection, you should definitely listen to his songs, feel the vibe and look up the translations.

dazai is watching his lover spellbound. he has so much life in his eyes that only reflects off chuuya. there is a smile on his face, leaving absolutely no room for pretense. and while nakahara is erupting into laughter and wrecking everything around, osamu's breath hitches. chuuya is his deity. not arahabaki. even a blink seems to be a betrayal. and when there's almost nothing of the city left, osamu is grabbing the other half of his soul and pulling him into a passionate kiss. and there is only the madness of the ultimate duo in the wasteland. the world is disappearing.
