Hello, I'm paper-storm's anon, here for details on the underage tag in Snake Eyes? I tried to read Andie's replies with your answer but it got cut off by the word limit. Thank you so much!!
Hi! :-)
So, about Snake Eyes (let me see if I can put this under a cut to avoid spoilers...):
So the main story happens when Bucky is 20, and the underage noncon/abuse has been going on since he was around 13/14 - we donāt see the underage parts happen in āreal time,ā as such, but we see the present ongoing version, because itās still happening, and then we learn about it as other characters figure it out, and they do talk about it in pretty frank terms. Thereāre also some flashback/hallucination/sensory memory moments in Buckyās POV (blurry and often drugged, so Iād say not *super* graphic, but heās clearly remembering feelings, hands and bodies, etc, and itās clear whatās happening). And itās being done by people supposed to protect him (bodyguards, Pierce, etc), who also give him drugs and sometimes physically get rough with him (they canāt leave marks, because he has to make public appearances, but they do things like literally force-feed him pills). He also has what other characters suspect (though not diagnosed) is an eating disorder, because heās always supposed to look pretty and also he usually canāt eat much.
Thereās a fair amount of gaslighting/people just not believing him (because hey, heās on drugs, everyone knows that)/people doing things āfor his own goodā, and thatās been going on for years - though this does get better as his friends find out whatās happening and people start to be on his side.
Thereās also some dubcon verging on noncon with Steve and Bucky - as in, Bucky does want Steve (heās genuinely in love with Steve), but heās also high and not really capable of proper consent, and also heās very used to using sex to please people and used to not really being able to say no. (Steve knows Buckyās a little intoxicated but thinks theyāre still in the realm of okay and mutual wanting (which is kind of true; Bucky does want him); when Steve figures out what happened, heās horrified, and thinks of himself as having done, well, noncon, because Bucky really couldnāt properly consent - itās messy.)
Iād say itās a hopeful ending, if not quite all wrapped up - there was meant to be a part 2 (not sure if thatās still the plan), so it does have an ending - revelations, Bucky starting to heal and recover (itās a work in progress, but heās working on it), Bucky naming the people who did this, friends and Steve on his side - but the abusers (especially Pierce) havenāt really been punished yet (though some of them have been punched a lot). But the assumption is that there are about to be Consequences, and things are...looking brighter, at least, at the end.
Hopefully that helps! Itās a brilliant piece of writing - sometimes brutal, it hurts, itās a heart-stab many times over, but that means itās tremendously effective. And it does end with hope, I think. <3
