This cultivar of Solanum lycopersicum ‘Black Moon’ (oval plum cherry tomato) is considered to have a wonderfully complex favour, even beating the legendary Solanum lycopersicum ‘Sungold’ in taste tests. The fruit have a combination of a firm, juicy texture and outstanding flavour.

From the Goth Gardener Dept.: These are so cool for anyone’s garden or salad. They’re Indigo Roses and are classified as "blue" tomatoes, but they’re actually closer to black, and contain the same anthocyanins found in blueberries. You can buy the seeds on Etsy.

Black tomatoes are found to have significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative and hypnotic effects. They also have beneficial effects on sperm count and motility.
My next door neighbour (of 13 years) grows tomatoes. Each year I watch the tomatoes and sometimes I’ll look after them for him if he goes away. This year some of the tomatoes are BLACK and I have been lovingly watching and photographing them and…they’re beautiful
Last weekend he came out when I was coming back through my door (he had clearly lain in wait for me!) and said:
“Please help yourself to as many tomatoes as you like!”
My family now make out like I bullied him into this and he didn’t really mean it!

We’ve had a lot of fun picking tomatoes in our little garden this summer. This variety is called a ‘black’ cherry tomato and although they don’t look very black to me, they’re definitely not the usual bright red colour!
Black tomatoes update
I opened the photo from Calvin’s last story about his “massive” plants in my photopaint software, rotated & zoomed to identify the varieties of tomatoes written on the markers. There are 3 heirloom types. Cherokee Purple has dark streaks but is mainly regular tomato-colored. Black Krim is a bit more uniformly dark-skinned. And Black Beauty really is as black as a tomato can be on the outside & much redder than usual on the inside. All 3 are famous for their rich earthy flavor, too thin-skinned to easily survive transport to grocery stores, & excellent choices for a home gardener.
