Hi, I don't turn 18 for another 2 weeks (idk if that matters?) but I want to contact my representative about the travesty that is the new immigration ban. I've never done this before and can't ask my parents for help with it so what should I say? What is it like? I'm guessing I don't talk to them directly so how do I get the person who picks up to care enough to pass on the message?
Hey there! Good on you! Okay, I talked with my civics expert pal @nudistfeline so here are the steps, along with a few tips:
1. Depending on what your extracurriculars are like, if youâre free before five, you can call during business hours. This gives you a tactical advantage over most adults. Use it.
2. Find your reps: look up your house member by zipcode here, and your senators by state here.Â
3. Go to their website, check their twitter feed: have they released any public statements on the issue? If so, what is their stance? (Also since youâre technically too young to just say youâre a âconstituentâ, look up what year your senators are running for re-election. Thisâll come in handy in a sec.)
4. Prepare your call script:
Establish that you live in the repâs area. The staffer will probably ask for your zipcode.
State right upfront what specific piece of policy you are reacting to.
Personalize/localize it if you can: does your state/city have a vibrant immigrant population? Are you the child/grandchild of immigrants? Do you know people personally affected by this issue? Can you phrase your concerns in a way that appeal to values the rep wants to be seen as having (ex. Christian compassion)?
Make a demand for action, keeping it within the scope of what the rep can actually do.
If itâs a House member: inform them that you will be voting in 2018. If itâs a senator, inform them that you will be voting in [the year their term ends; may or may not be 2018 so you gotta check]
SAMPLE:Â âHi, Iâm a resident of [CITY, STATE]. Iâm calling with a message for [CONGRESSPERSONâS NAME] about the recent Executive Order signed by President Trump, temporarily banning immigration from seven majority-Muslim countries. This measure goes against everything we stand for as a nation of immigrants and a nation that upholds religious freedom. [PERSONALIZE HERE: âAS SOMEONE WHO...â OR âIN [STATE], WE...â]â
IF YOUR REP SUPPORTS THE MUSLIM BAN OR HAS BEEN SILENT: âI urge [CONGRESSPERSON] to do their patriotic duty and find the political courage to condemn this deeply un-American measure.IF YOUR REP IS A CHRISTIAN, ABSOLUTELY INVOKE THAT; SOME QUOTABLE BIBLE VERSES HERE]Â
IF YOUR REP HAS SPOKEN OUT AGAINST THE MUSLIM BAN:Â âI thank [CONGRESSPERSON] for their leadership and for standing on the right side of history, and I encourage them to back legislation overriding this bigoted, xenophobic measure.â
EITHER WAY:Â âI will be voting in [YEAR THEIR TERM ENDS]. This issue is very important to me, and I will be closely watching how [CONGRESSPERSON] responds. Thank you.â
5. You may get a busy signal or a full mailbox. If so, look up the contact info on your repâs website & try the local office instead of the DC. (Also, wait a bit and try the DC number again.)Â
6. If there are an overwhelming number of menu options, most modern phone systems will connect you with a person if you keep hitting 0.
7. If you get through, a staffer will pick up. Be polite to them. Read your whole script.Â
8. The stafferâs job is to tally up all the calls they get, and sort them by stance taken. These figures will be reported to your rep. Congratulations! You just made your voice heard!
9. As you can see, it is sort of a numbers game. If youâve got similarly politically-minded friends, talk to them about the issues that matter to you and try to get them to call, too. Hell, have a call-your-reps party and watch a fun movie after. And if you donât know kids your age with the same politics as you: friend I have been there and I swear you are not alone. <3

Shitty, shitty day here... death in the extended family and my heart hurts because her mother died in Nova Scotia but she lives in the USA... no travel, no funeral... đ˘ one of those situations you feel helpless about and it hurts not to be able to help. We also had to go out in the drizzly grey that is todayâs (totally appropriate) weather and today #gianttiger was a... not a great word but âirritantâ There is 1 cashier there who is always abrasive, very curt and with the recent social distancing etc... she is worse -loud and bossing people no matter what they do... -unless- you are one of her favoured customers, then she is sweetness and light and sparkles. My mum and I are not in the shiny group and she was worse than usual today. There was a manager when I worked #BiWay that was the same, just one of those personalities, no point in complaining itâs not a changeable thing. Otherwise we love Giant Tiger! It was also just such a vivid difference from todayâs @michaelsstores pick-up which was all hullo, waves and obviously smiles even under the masks worn by all. Done while standing in a total downpour too. But... after todayâs rain we have a #rainbow New front mat tossed onto the order at the end... whenever we open the door it will be there. Life will get better... there will be a vaccine at some stage... we are together... there is flour so there are cookies baking in the oven... tomorrow is @daysend_photography birthday... and the sun will return. #grateful #thankful #wewillgetthroughthis #colourtherapy #darknessandlight https://www.instagram.com/p/CAOUj1WAOkZ/?igshid=1q4jtxm0n22no
