#Repost @brownenvironmentalist (@get_repost) ・・・ 1/4 We’re on a mission to deconstruct environmental narratives — by this we mean the misleading, inaccurate, and harmful ‘common’ narratives that do not give credit to BIWOC/POC; do not acknowledge our influential presence; do not name BIPOC as the leaders of the environment; and/or do not amplify our voices as BIPOC in the environment/nature as a whole. . . One of these narratives is that of the history/usage of the term: “tree huggers”. For us personally, the concept has always conjured the image of the white hippy, or of white environmentalism as a whole. But — spoiler alert — the term originally belongs to WOC. . . When we did Google ‘tree hugger’, we didn’t see the original history arise, but we did see white folks and even a whole article/blog post comprised of popular white environmentalists. Unsurprising as it is, it’s a hurtful narrative that whitewashes the history of WOC’s longstanding history of environmental stewardship. . . And so, we’re beginning our series with the first tree huggers, and reclaiming the word for what it truly is and was: a movement led by women of color to protect their environment and their community. . . This is a reflection of the great community we are all a part of, and it’s what inspired this account to even be created in the first place. Thank you all again. This is a new, collaborative and long-form journalism project by POC to destroy the white-dominated narrative over environment / nature / outdoors and environmentalism as a whole. . The inspiration comes mostly from the lack of attention given to BIPOC and the work they do for the planet. We are the original “environmentalists”, the original eco-warriors, and yet the narrative is centered around white Americans’ history, voice, thought, etc. ( #wypipo ) . The goal is to chronicle the experiences of POC around the world who are in some way fighting for their communities via the exploration of current and past BIPOC work. The history and information exists. We seek to bring it all together and make it known. . Ultimately, this is a long delayed response to personal experiences in the environmental field — as an ecologist, as a youth educator, as an activist, as an admirer of nature, as a first-generation Latinx American — and it’s my/our hope that this project will foster discussion, growth, healing, and fuel for your daily life. .
