*Tohumdan yetiştirdiğiniz saksı bitkileri için ilk üç hafta gübre kullanmayın. 

Eğer toprağınıza solucan gübresi karıştırmadıysanız 3. haftada işe, azot yoğunluğu olan besin takviyesi uygulayarak başlayabilirsiniz. Fakat satın alabileceğimiz ürünler bir yana, biz önce bitkilerimize gıda ve diğer evsel atıklardan faydalanarak besin sağlamanın yollarını ve hangi besinin neye faydalı olduğunu, detayına girmek için sabırsızlandığım bir sürü başka şey ile harmanlayıp konuşalım... 

Hayvanlar enerji ihtiyaçlarını besin tüketerek, bitkiler ise güneş ışığını klorofil aracılığıyla hapsederek karşılar. Fakat bu hapsedilen enerjinin öncelikle canlının faydalanabileceği bir hale dönüştürülmesi gerekir. Bu transferi sağlayan molekül adenozin trifosfattır (ATP) -ki kendisine ayrıca “doğanın enerji deposu” da denilir... Neden? 

Bitkilerin ürettiği ATP, detaya inmeyi lüzumsuz bulduğum aşağıdaki çizimde görüleceği üzere basit olarak fosfor, nitrojen ve riboz şekeri bileşiminden oluşur.

Fosfor -yazının devamında kendisinden daha çok bahsedeceğim- yaşayan tüm canlıların tüketmesi gereken bir besindir.

Sebze yediğimizde bitkilerin içerdiği fosfor bize gerekli olan adenozin trifosfatın üretilmesini sağlar. Öldüğümüzde de bizim içerdiğimiz fosfor toprağa, bitkiler tarafından kullanılmak üzere geri dönmüş olur -kullandığımız gübreler hayvan kemiklerinden çıkarılan fosforu içerir.

*1997 Nobel Kimya ödülü ATP sentezi konusunda yaptıkları çalışmalardan dolayı Dr John Walker,  Dr Paul Boyer ve  Dr Jens Skou’a takdim edilmiştir. Ne diyorduk? Bitkiler klorofil aracılığıyla enerji ihtiyaçlarını karşılar ve hem ATP hem de klorofil üretimi için (yeşil yeşil bitkiler) nitrojene ihtiyaç duyarlar. Nitrojen, yani azot, bitkinin büyümesi ve fotosentez için gereklidir ve özellikle meyve yetiştiriciliğinde, meyvenin oluşmaya başlayacağı zaman yaklaştıkça azaltarak kullanılır (önce yaprak üretimini teşvik eden azot sonra meyveye yardımcı diğer besinler)... 

Peki solucan gübresi, suya karıştırıp kullanabileceğimiz sıvı nitrojen, veya ölü hayvan kemikleri (!!) dışında azotu başka nereden elde edebiliriz? Kedi veya köpeğinizin tararken biriken tüylerden veya demlediğiniz kahvenin posasından!

Fosfora geri dönelim... Fosfor, yaşayan tüm hücrelerde bulunur. Genetik bilginin aktarımı ve enerji üretimi haricinde bitkinin erken kök, fidan ve tohum gelişimine katkısı vardır; hastalıklarla savaşmasına ve kış soğuklarına dayanmasına yardımcı olur. Eksikliği farkedilene kadar genellikle geç kalınmış olur. Peki kimyasal besinler harici fosforu nereden elde edebiliriz? Yediğiniz karidesten arta kalanlardan ve yakılmış salatalık kabuklarından. Azot ve fosfor dışında bitkiler için önemli olan 3. en önemli besin potasyumdur. Potasyum, fotosentez sırasında gözeneklerin kapanıp açılmasını ve ATP üretimi için gerekli enzimlerin aktivasyonunu tetikler, suyun köklerden gövdeye iletimini ve kuraklığa karşı dayanıklı olmasını sağlar. Sağlığıyla ilgili olarak bitkinin büyümesini, üremesini; şeklini, rengini, meyve ve sebzelerin tadını ve çokluğunu etkiler. Eksikliğinde yapraklarda kahverengileşme ve uçlarında kıvrılmalar görülür; damarlar sarılaşabilir ve yaprakların alt-yan kısımlarında mor noktalar görülebilir. Doğada muz kabuklarında, odun külünde ve yine kahve posasında bulunur. Balık besliyorsanız akvaryum suyunu da kullanabilirsiniz. 

Kalsiyum, magnezyum ve sülfür, bitkinizin ihtiyacı olan; fakat diğer üçüne kıyasla daha az miktarlarına ihtiyacı olan besinlerdir. Kalsiyum, hücre duvarının oluşmasını ve bitkinin hastalıklara karşı direnç göstermesini sağlar; yumurta kabuğunda bolca bulunur.

Magnezyumun etkileri azotunkine ve sülfürünki de fosforunkine benzerlik gösterir. Magnezyum, fotosentez için şarttır ve topraktaki potasyum miktarı arttıkça azalır -denge şart! Bitkilerinizin yapraklarını İngiliz tuzu-su karışımıyla fısfıslarsanız (400gramı 13-14 liradır) hem magnezyum hem sülfür ihtiyaçlarını karşılamış olursunuz.  Bahçeli evler için bu besinleri kullanmanın en güzel yolu kompost hazırlamaktır fakat fidelerinizi saksıya taşımadan önce bu besinleri toz haline getirip torfunuzla karıştırmanız da etkili bir çözümdür. Akvaryum suyu ve muz kabuğu gibi ürünleri karıştırıp toprağınızı fısfıslamak için kullanabilirsiniz fakat organik besinleri kullanmanın ne yazık ki olumsuz yanları da vardır. Bitkinizin böceklenmesine veya sinek çekmesine sebep olabileceği gibi - Sinekleri uzak tutmak için portakal kabuklarıyla çay hazırlayın ve bu karışımı (soğuduğunda) bitkinizin toprağını fısfıslamak için kullanın- organik atıklarınızın çözülüp toprağa karışması da zaman alacağından ve verdiğiniz besinin miktarını bilemeyeceğiniz için bir takım besin eksikliklerine sebep olabilirsiniz. Bu ürünler yüzünden toprağınızın Ph derecesinin düşmesi veya artması da köklerin bu besinlerden faydalanmasını engelleyebilir. Benim tavsiyem, bu tür besinleri ek destek olarak kullanmanız ve bitkinizin erken dönemi için solucan gübresi gibi organik çözümlerden faydalanmanızdır. Daha sonraki dönemler için potasyum ve fosfor takviyesi sağlayacak karışımlar hazırlayabilirsiniz veya aşağıdaki gibi bitkinize vereceğiniz suya karıştıracağınız kimyasal ürünler satın alabilirsiniz.

Besinler ve tabak arasındaki renk karşıtlığının olması besini olduğundan daha belirgin hale getirerek tabaktaki besinin daha büyük şekilde algılanmasına neden olmaktadır. Cornell Üniversitesi’nde laboratuvar ortamında yapılan bir çalışmada katılımcıların yarısına Alfredo (beyaz) soslu makarna diğer yarısına ise domates sosla hazırlanmış makarna servisi yapılmıştır. Katılımcılara rastgele kırmızı veya beyaz tabak verilmiştir. Beyaz bir tabağa Alfredo (beyaz) soslu veya kırmızı bir tabağa domates soslu makarna alanlar, renk karşıtlığından dolayı diğerlerine göre tabaklarına %22 daha fazla makarna almışlardır (Rothstein, 2012). Besin ve tabak rengi arasındaki ilişkiye dikkat ederek tabağınıza aldığınız besinin miktarına hakim olabilirsiniz. ✨

Stepping forward for the Q&As, we also have Besin with their art for UnlikeClockwork’s story “Potentials.” They were very excited for the project, and made this clear from the start.

What first excited you about this project?  Superhero Kairi. Literally everything about Superhero Kairi. When Clock and I were first talking about this project and doing initial sketches, I posted a mock-up of the original outfit that we didn’t end up using, and had a little quote from me that said, “Five Stars - Give this woman a knife!” and I honestly wish that would have fit with the final draft.

Did you learn any new techniques for this work? I’ll say. This is the first watercolor piece I’ve ever done. I’d lost faith in acrylic, and had honestly been up on the fence about whether or not I wanted to continue art at all. Then this event came along. I had seen a few watercolor art progress videos online, and was surprised they could get such clear color — something I had always struggled with in those underfunded middle school art classes where they give you plastic brushes, a $1 palette, printer paper, and call it good. Armed with the supplies of a 60 year old woman’s craft room and recently bought (decent) brushes, I descended with proper tools… and this happened. In the most literal sense, every technique I used in this piece — aside from the pencil sketch and inking — is brand new to me.

Are there any symbols that you have tied in from the story? Why did you choose them? They’re not directly from the story, but I did consult the writer about them. The graffiti and advertisements you see in the background in the full piece actually allude to either world building elements or plot points. My favorite is the graffiti high up that says, “SALVATION IS HERE” except it’s cut off so we see “HER” instead of “HERE.”

With the Kingdom Hearts Rogue Nebula kicking off on the 20th, we thought we’d take some time to highlight a few of the writers and artists who stepped forward within the event. One of which is the writer UnlikeClockwork, who has written the story “Potentials.” UnlikeClockwork’s art was done by Besin.

Without further ado, we have a short Q&A from the writer!

Would you consider this a cover piece, an interstitial piece, or a back cover piece? Where would this piece be placed in the text for peak effectiveness?  This could either be a cover or an interstitial piece. As a cover, I think it would highlight Kairi getting to be a badass, which is certainly an important aspect of the work (I hope! haha), but I also love it within the fic. 

There's a point in the fic leading up to the climax, where Kairi is done taking shit from everyone, and is going to go Take Care of This Bullshit, and I think this piece encapsulates that vibe SO effectively. Drawing attention to her development up to that point is incredibly important, and that moment she pivots from "how can this be fixed?" to "I'm going to be the one to fix it."

Does this piece add any new dimensions to the text? I think it helps ground the text. Seeing the city, with billboards and graffiti made it feel very real, even to me as the writer, and Besin and I chatted some about the costume design and how to blend aesthetic with function. Besin also came up with the line "Light Expires", the message scrawled in graffiti on the wall, which I then added to the fic. It actually works so well for the way attitudes shift in the story (though I don't want to spoil exactly what I mean!)

What is your favorite part about this piece? Her STANCE, oh my god. The way she's walking would make me want to get tf out of her way, and that's really what everyone should be doing at this point. Besin also added the amazing touch of the "Salvation is Here" advertisement being visible as "Salvation is Her" which is... so good. SO GOOD.

Does this piece highlight any of your favorite parts of the story you've written? I love the attitude shift that Kairi goes through, and that moment she decides that it doesn't matter if she's comfortable or confident in what she needs to do, she is going to do it. And her posture and stance in this work really brings that to life.

What is your favorite part about this piece?

I have to choose? That’s a little cruel. I love the setup. I love the color in the final draft. I love the lights overhead and their clothes. I love Aqua’s hair. But if I had to choose my favorite part about this, it’s how absolutely confident Aqua looks, which is extremely important to the perception of her character and her entire narrative within the story. It’s so important that she’s seen and perceived this way because of what goes on in her head in this scene… but I can’t give too much away.

Is this a scene from your story? If so, what makes it so memorable? This is actually the opening scene, and it came out flawlessly. Aqua’s jacket, her hair, her pins — you’ll see more in the final version, of course. The scene itself is memorable because it sets up Aqua’s mentality to the audience. There’s a lot going on, and there’s a lot about to go on. She’s tired, she’s exhausted, and she’s at the end of her rope — but you wouldn’t know that by looking at her.

Would you consider this a cover piece, and interstitial piece, or a back cover piece? Where would this piece be placed in the text for peak effectiveness? If this were a book, I would put it on the cover, then display copies of the book Literally Everywhere for Peak Display. Max Visibility. (Maybe a poster.) But enough about how much I love this piece — for the posting of the story itself this art will be placed after the prologue, at the very beginning of Chapter One, just as Aqua is taking a breath and leaning into the microphone.
