Beregond and Pippin in the City
[reblogs appreciated , c0mms open!]
I venture to say that most of the time, when people talk about how LOTR raises standards and expectations for good men, they're primarily thinking of characters like Aragorn and Faramir and Samwise. And for good reason, of course, as these are peak examples and role models.
But I think the basis for the raised standards for male figures can be found in so many other places in LOTR. And to assume it all centers in Aragorn, Faramir, and Sam kind of does a disservice to all the others.
Because the type of qualities that raise standards is also in characters we might not tend to think of when it comes to this. Sure, it's absolutely displayed in Aragorn and Faramir and Sam. But it's also in Legolas, in Elrond, in Boromir, in Beregond. It's in Merry and Pippin and Gimli, in Theoden, and Celeborn, who listened to his wife's perspective (on Dwarves/Gimli), thought about it, corrected his own perspective, and owned up to his error (yep, that's all in the books!).
All I'm saying is, if you want to see just how Tolkien raises the standards for men, prime examples abound beyond the immediately obvious ones.
Since it's summer and I dress like a tourist dad in Florida, here is a list of Tolkien characters that wear Hawaiian shirts:
Boromir
Gimli
Eomer
Eowyn
Merry and Pippin (they wear them on the same days)
Tom Bombadil probably
Beregond
Gandalf
Ulmo, it just makes sense
All of Thorin's company
Fingolfin
Fatty Bolger
The entire Took family actually
Glorfindel
Anyone on Buckland (except Frodo)
Legolas
Actually every elf in Mirkwood
