I think part of why I'm so fascinated with Sméagol as a character is because he does not fit into LOTR at all. He's not a sunny, innocent, heroic hobbit. He's not 100% an evil thrall of Sauron, like the orcs. Tolkien said it himself, he's morally grey. And I think that's why the public doesn't know what to do with Gollum. However, in my mind, there's more than enough precedent for what to do with morally grey characters in media. Take Deadpool for example, or Shadow the Hedgehog. I feel like there's so much that could be done with interpretations of Sméagol's story.
If you have been around the Cafe of Arda lately, you might have seen small creature slinking out the back door, muttering to himself.
"Yes, yes, Smeagol will take a break and go outside!" he grumbles, peeling off his barista apron. "And we never comes back again, no, precious!" He wads up the apron and throws it in the dumpster.
Then he pulls out the most ancient brick of a cell phone, punches in a number, and makes a quick call. In another moment, a dark car pulls up, a door opens, an orc hand reaches out and pulls Smeagol inside, and the car dashes off.
That's how it is that, when the manager comes out a moment later to have the promised "little talk" with Smeagol, there is no Smeagol in sight.

Update: Discord server plans
Hi folks! I'll keep this post short.
This is my final attempt to gauge interest for a discord server. If people are interested, I'll happily go ahead with new development. Otherwise, I'll shelf the idea until later when this blog has grown more.
As a reminder: the server would have early updates for Smeagol-Daily uploads, a place for fanworks and analysis, and a place for other LOTR conversation. It would also be really valuable in sourcing future Smeagol-Daily content, and I would accept submissions to the blog there.

I think about pre-ring Sméagol sometimes! Did you know he would have been about 15-30 years old when he found the ring? Keep in mind Hobbits become of age at about 33. For reference on how that reflects a halfling's maturity, Pippin was 29 during LOTR. 🥲
Also, Sméagol was of a wealthy and large family, which might explain his terrible personality.
