WHY DID MOVIE GANDALF TAKE PIPPIN WITH HIM TO RESCUE FARAMIR? ONE THAT'S DUMB AND DANGEROUS AND TWO HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE CHILLING WITH BERGIL GETTING A TOUR OF THE CITY.
Fic: petals (@gondorweek Day Four)
Written for Day Four of @gondorweek: 'Osgiliath, Grief and Conflict, "I love only that which they defend."'
(actually managed to hit two of the prompts, sort of)
Anyway, thanks for the prompts! This was a fun one.
Word Count: 1,077
Rating: Gen
Summary:
All children of Gondor were told the history of — or, at least, knew the history from books — the White Tree, and Bergil, son of Beregond, was no different. Of course, being only nine, Bergil had not yet seen the tree flower in his life; nor had most, if not all, of the people of Minas Tirith.

Chapter Twenty-Two: Stay and Be Comforted
(The above is the link to the chapter; I'm away from my computer so it's a little different from normal!)
Summary:
"But Aragorn smiled. 'It will serve,' he said. 'The worst is now over. Stay and be comforted!' Then taking two leaves, he laid them on his hands and breathed on them, and then he crushed them, and straightway a living freshness filled the room, as if the air itself awoke and tingled, sparkling with joy. And then he cast the leaves into the bowls of steaming water that were brought to him, and at once all hearts were lightened. For the fragrance that came to each was like a memory of dewy mornings of unshadowed sun in some land of which the fair world in Spring is itself but a fleeting memory. But Aragorn stood up as one refreshed, and his eyes smiled as he held a bowl before Faramir's dreaming face." -- The Houses of Healing, The Return of the King
@valandhirwriter was her ususal amazing self; please go check out her work!!!
PS. I'm about to head off on a 2 week holiday, but I WILL be updating as usual! I have pre-prepared the next couple of chapters so all I have to do is click 'post chapter' and you'll be able to see the next step on this journey!
I adore so many things about this chapter, but I think discovering Ioreth (art by @ronanwhitehouse) and a tidbit of her past scolding a mischievous Boromir was by far my favourite.
Also, so much of this chapter makes me think of this depiction by @emilybeemartin (sans Faramir being in the Houses of Healing of course). Boromir returning home to find it in this horrendous state and several of his loved ones injured, dead or dying? I could not even imagine... Amazing work!
I’m really tired of everyone who keeps on saying that the very idea of Frodo & Sam being in love somehow “ruins the story’s theme of close platonic friendship.”
Are y’all forgetting Merry & Pippin?
Are y’all forgetting Legolas & Gimli?
Are y’all forgetting Frodo & Merry?
Are y’all forgetting Frodo & Pippin?
Are y’all forgetting Sam & Pippin?
Are y’all forgetting Sam & Merry?
Are y’all forgetting Aragorn & Legolas?
Are y’all forgetting Aragorn & Gimli?
Are y’all forgetting Aragorn & the hobbits?
Are y’all forgetting Legolas & the hobbits?
Are y’all forgetting Gimli & the hobbits?
Are y’all forgetting Boromir & the hobbits?
Are y’all forgetting Aragorn & Boromir?
Are y’all forgetting Bilbo & Gandalf?
Are y’all forgetting Frodo & Gandalf?
Are y’all forgetting Pippin & Gandalf?
Are y’all forgetting Aragorn & Gandalf?
Are y’all forgetting Pippin & Faramir?
Are y’all forgetting Aragorn & Éomer?
Are y’all forgetting Pippin & Beregond? (only in the book)
Are y’all forgetting Pippin & Bergil? (also only in the book)
Are y’all forgetting Treebeard & the hobbits?
Are y’all forgetting the entire Fellowship as the surrogate family that they are?
I just listed 23 examples of close platonic friendship in this story.
But sure, if a 24th example is romantic instead, that completely eradicates the other 23 examples and means the story isn’t about platonic friendship at all.
Sure.

Sunday notes 6-8-25
'Twenty-nine!' said the lad and whistled. 'Why, you are quite old! As old as my uncle Iorlas. Still,' he added hopefully, 'I wager I could stand you on your head or lay you on your back.'
'Maybe you could, if I let you,' said Pippin with a laugh. 'And maybe I could do the same to you: we know some wrestling tricks in my little country. Where, let me tell you, I am considered uncommonly large and strong; and I have never allowed anyone to stand me on my head. So if it came to a trial and nothing else would serve, I might have to kill you. For when you are older, you will learn that folk are not always what they seem; and though you may have taken me for a soft stranger-lad and easy prey, let me warn you: I am not, I am a halfling, hard, bold, and wicked!' Pippin pulled such a grim face that the boy stepped back a pace, but at once he returned with clenched fists and the light of battle in his eye.
'No!' Pippin laughed. 'Don't believe what strangers say of themselves either! I am not a fighter. But it would be politer in any case for the challenger to say who he is.'
listen I love kids but if a ten year old who's taller than me told me (mid-20s, 159 cm/5 ft 3) told me he could beat me up I cannot guarantee I wouldn't do the same
We’re gonna teach ‘em how to say goodbye…
