If Libet was right, that should have happened at 500 milliseconds before the movement. But the algorithm couldnāt tell any difference until about only 150 milliseconds before the movement, the time people reported making decisions in Libetās original experiment. In other words, peopleās subjective experience of a decisionāwhat Libetās study seemed to suggest was just an illusionāappeared to match the actual moment their brains showed them making a decision.

You might find an enjoyable read regarding Benjamin Libet and the "Libet Experiment"; the outcome of the experiment was the discovery that electrical buildup in the brain could last for nearly 300 milliseconds before someone had the conscious thought to act. It called to question the potential fallacy of "free will", as in, the suggestion that your brain has already made the decision before you consciously become aware of the decision you've made.
However, the man who derived and performed the experiment somewhat disagreed with this sentiment, saying that though the brain decided to act before you were aware of the act, you had what he called "free won't", which is, obviously, the power of a conscientious veto.

Which is bizarre because Libet himself explicitly endorsed the reality of free will, emphatically he endorsed the reality of free will. And Libet point out that his research unequivocally supports the reality of libertarian free will. But his experiments are described very often both in the scientific literature and in the popular press as supportive of materialismāwhich is something that they donāt support and something that Libet made very clear was not his conclusion.

Michael Egnor: Yes, and undoubtedly, in some situations, it would be the result of ignorance on the part of the person making the claim. The person may just not know much about Libetās work. Or may have no insight into the original research and may have just heard about it or heard wrongly.
