Michael Egnor (right): Yes, the misinterpretation is very common and itâs almost routine to read or to hear Libetâs work being described as scientific evidence for the absence of free will. Which is bizarre because Libet himself explicitly endorsed the reality of free will, emphatically he endorsed the reality of free will. And Libet point out that his research unequivocally supports the reality of libertarian free will. But his experiments are described very often both in the scientific literature and in the popular press as supportive of materialismâwhich is something that they donât support and something that Libet made very clear was not his conclusion.

Robert J. Marks: It seems that in order to do that, they would have to exclude the part of the âfree wonâtâ in the experiment.
Michael Egnor: Yes, and undoubtedly, in some situations, it would be the result of ignorance on the part of the person making the claim. The person may just not know much about Libetâs work. Or may have no insight into the original research and may have just heard about it or heard wrongly.

The Libet Experiment: Is Free Will Just an Illusion?
The belief that conscious will is merely ââan illusion created by the brainââ appears to be gaining in popularity among cognitive neuroscientists. Its main adherents usually refer to the classic, but controversial âLibet-experimentsâ, as the empirical evidence that vindicates this illusion-claim. However, based on recent work that provides other interpretations of the Libet-experiments, we argue that the illusion-claim is not only empirically invalid, but also theoretically incoherent, as it is rooted in a category mistake; namely, the presupposition that neuronal activity causes conscious will. We show that the illusion-claim is based on the behaviorist âinput-outputâ paradigm, and discuss the notions of âself-organizationâ and âself steeringâ to provide an alternative perspective on the causal efficacy of conscious will. In the final sections, a tentative theoretical picture is sketched of conscious will as an instance of self-steered self-organization. We conclude that the subjective experience of conscious will is not a misguided one, but rather that the mechanisms supporting conscious will are considerably more complex than mainstream cognitive neuroscience currently acknowledges.
