“The secret to being a writer is that you have to write. It’s not enough to think about writing or to study literature or plan a future life as an author. You really have to lock yourself away, alone, and get to work.” — Augusten Burroughs

[And if you already saw this on Instagram or Facebook, SORRY. I am a little excited.]
Oh, and my fiancé Jacob took this sweet photo of me and one of my original nonfiction gods,* Augusten Burroughs, at Powell's last night, and we had a brief but absolutely wonderful conversation. (All obvious indications of my superfan-dom aside, I am capable, while in public, of conducting myself with all requisite decorum and restraint, rather than, say, issuing a remark such as "OMG, I'M STANDING CLOSE ENOUGH TO SMELL YOU.") (He smelled pretty good, if you want to know.)
*Probably* related: It's now 10:41 AM the next day and I've already written (not counting the obnoxiously gleeful verbiage of this post) 6,249 words, so let's just say that seeing this author, whose approach to the genre changed everything for me more than fourteen years ago, was goddamn energizing. __ * Not, I might clarify, my *only* nonfiction god (I'm pretty polytheistic when it comes to this category), but he is damn sure right up there. And while ALL his books are crazy with grace and redemption and pee-your-pants mordant humor--all the best, most honest stuff--it was his first memoir (after his thoroughly delightful novel, Sellevision), Running With Scissors, that caused a kind of seismic shift in my mind, and helped me understand what could be done with horrifying histories, besides just crying over them. (Or producing books with that embarrassing "woe is me" stench.) I wasn't quite ready, yet, to do much with all that (I published some, but then stopped sending out work, because REASONS), but that shift stayed with me, through everything I still had to get through, in order to arrive at this moment. God bless.
Cine: Running With Scissors (2006)
