the fact so many episodes of house revolve around a patient learning that their passion/duty is killing them and choosing to continue living with that and the team being shocked and confused. and then house himself revolves his life around his passion/duty of medicine even though its killing him because NOT doing it would kill him even faster. gah. augh
hi hi. skibidibastian bc im obsessed thx 🩷
I've spent a decent amount of time thinking about how tycho's lack of povs in books 1-3 mirrors his silence and near-absence throughout his trial, and how both of those things serve to deny him a voice and agency within his own story - not only in the in-universe litigation of his innocence/guilt but also on a narrative level. but I have neglected to think about how erisi also does not have povs before book 4 for essentially the same reason - the story cannot confirm or deny her being the spy. and the presence of her and tycho's povs in book 4 is pretty minimal! they both get subsumed by other characters - wedge and corran for tycho, fliry vorru for erisi.
which. like. tycho's story is largely about being stripped of agency and personhood by the institutions he lives under (the empire, yes, but also the new republic) and submitting oneself to various forms of subjugation. erisi's is about scrabbling for power and selling out in the process.
this is erisi "99% of sellouts stop selling out right before they get power over all the people and institutions they sold out to" dlarit we're talking about! erisi who is defined by being an evil fakeout love interest, who plays up the angle of Being Attractive and being reduced to a sex object because it gives her leverage (over corran, over vorru) and the ability to get what she wants, even if in the long run she still ultimately suffers under patriarchy. erisi who collaborates with and is complicit in the imperial occupation on thyferra so that xucphra can maintain economic and political power, even if the imperial forces see her as a provincial mid-rimmer, even if her death for them is meaningless, even if thyferra is still, at the end of the day, willfully or not, Under Imperial Occupation. of course she submits herself to the condition of not being allowed a narrative voice for three books - the same condition tycho is subjected to. of course it still doesn't save her.
I Am Emotionally Ruined
