Distant Memories
Chapter Two
I stared at the ceiling, my feet resting on top of my desk as I waited for it to end. Â I had followed Sam all day, realizing he wasnât joking about having all the same classes. Â The likelihood of that being like 1 in a billion but it somehow happened with me. Â I found that throughout the day, he wasnât a bad guy. Â Just awkward and shy at times when it came to other âcoolerâ kids in school. But once I got past all the stuttering and mumbo jumbo, he was actually pretty cool himself. Â Still a total little bro though.
Which brings me back to his awkwardness. Â Apparently, it was present your class project day and it was Samâs turn. Â Though in a way, as I listened to the story of his great grandfather, I also found out Sam was trying to sell the old manâs stuff. I didnât know why but I continued to stare at the ceiling as the poor kid was pelted with paper and our teacher, who was a total douche, didnât really do much to curb anything.
After a few more minutes, the bell finally rang, the teacher going off about some random junk regarding school work but I just collected my bag, ignoring him. Â I was so grateful to be away from the confines of school that I didnât realize I was being followed into the halls as I made my way to my locker. Â When approaching, I felt a tap on my shoulder and I slowly turned to face the person who decided to disturb me.
âWad up, cutie?â the boy immediately made me cringe as I ignored him. Â I remembered his name from our last class, Trent I believe. Â I could tell right away he wasnât a very bright one and I didnât really want anything to do with him.
âCome on, say something,â he again pestered me.
âShouldnât you be running off to practice or with your girlfriend?â I inquired as he finally sighed, rolling his eyes at me. Â I closed my locker and turned, waiting for him to respond but instead, someone called for him and he walked away. Â Of course, not before giving me a wink and those stupid pointing fingers people do when they find someone attractive.
âIdiot,â I whispered, making my exit of the school. Â Of course, that was prohibited as I heard my name called, forcing me to turn to the boy who was super excited and nervous. Â I could tell something was amiss as he asked me to do him a huge favor.
âI know we just met and all but you see, I made this deal with my dad that if I saved up 2,000 dollars and made several Aâs that he would help me get a car and you see, I ended up spending like 25 of it on something I really wanted so I was wanting to know if you wanted to buy something from me to help me out,â his words jumbled together, forcing me to stare at him dumbfounded. Â After a moment, I sighed, thinking over his favor before nodding.
âI guess I can help you out. Â As long as I get to help you pick a car and you take me home in it,â I countered. Sam didnât hesitate to agree and he opened his bag, showing me all the stuff he brought to school. Â I went over them before deciding to look at the glasses he had brought in more detail.
âThese are actually pretty cool. Â Vintage,â I stated, going over them. Â I could see they were a bit dusty but I had a thing for vintage items, so I pulled out my wallet, handing over the money. Â Sam stared at me for a moment.
âThe glasses? You like the glasses?â
âYeah. Â They seem cool. Â Why?â
âNothing,â Sam didnât respond as he closed his bag, grabbing my hand as we headed out the doors. I really need to teach Sam not to drag me around. Â But as we went out, I noticed a green, old timey vehicle sitting out front. Â The man inside was a little pudgy and he stared at us with slight scrutiny as Sam jumped in the vehicle. Â I stood next to it, waiting as, who I assumed was his dad, stared at me in return. Â
âWhoâs this, Sam?â he inquired. Â Sam paused in his âI got another Aâ speech to finally realize his mistake before getting out the car and letting me slid in.
âNew girl at school. Sheâs cool and I invited her to go car shopping with us. Â Let her check out Tranquility and get her bearings. Â That cool?â Sam asked. Â His dad nodded, slowly pulling away from the curb. Â I pulled my phone out, ignoring the conversation up front as I texted my mom. Her response was amusing.
Use protection.
I almost puked.
âSo where you from?â
The question brought me out of my horror as I looked into the rear view, seeing that Samâs father was watching me. Â I processed his question before giving my honest answer. Â The man seemed like a fatherly figure, if I ever knew what that was.
âAnamoose, North Dakota.â
âAnamoose? Â Is that really a town?â Sam chuckled at the name as I nodded. Â
âYeah, itâs a town. Itâs southwest of Minot.â
âIâve been to Minot. Nice country up there in the summer months,â Samâs dad said. Â Before I could ask about his trip, both Sam and I were suddenly caught off guard by our new location. Â Almost immediately, I reacted, halfway leaning out of the car as Sam got excited.
âNo way, Dad. No way,â his excitement rolled off him as I practically stared in disbelief. Â If his dad was going to buy him a new Porches, then this boy was going to be the envy of the entire school. Â I would half guess that Trent would be eating his words and try to be Samâs friend after that. Â However, our excitement was cut short as we suddenly pulled out, his dad laughing at our reactions.
âYouâre right. I am not buying you a Porches.â
âBut they are just so pretty,â I whined, my arms hanging off the sides. Â I so wanted a sports car. Â But I could settle for anything that can outrun at least a minivan and a mustang. That I could settle on.
âOh come on? For your first car?â his dad laughed.
âI donât wanna talk to you for the rest of this day,â Sam said as his dad continued to chuckle, saying that it was a practical joke. Â Well, I can definitely say this about Samâs dad, he could be funny in a cruel way. Â And that tease was just that. Â Cruel.
Finally, after a few moments, we pulled into a used car lot and I had to choke back the laugh I had as we finally stopped. Â This place screamed âRIP OFFâ almost immediately as we climbed out of the vehicle. I looked around, noticing all the rust buckets and found it amazing that they were still together. Â One looked like it was barely together at all.
âGuy has to use duct tape,â I mumbled. Â Sam started complaining, using the term âhalf a piece of crap,â which was a perfect description. Â His dad defended his choice and the two continued to argue as I followed, keeping my eyes peeled for any type of diamond in the rough.
âGentleman, and lady,â the voice had all of us look toward a gentlemen as he approached. Â He was an older male, dark skinned, and wore a hideous looking Hawaiian shirt and a white hat. Â He immediately shook Mr. Witwickyâs hand, introducing himself.
âBobby Bolivia, like the country, except without the runs,â he chuckled at the poor joke, âHow can I help you?â
âWell, my son here, is looking to buy his first car,â Mr. Witwicky placed a hand on Samâs shoulder. The poor boy looked defeated as the salesman feigned being honored by their choice to come to his car lot. Â I didnât blame Sam as the man began pointing out cars, talking about all the good things out of them.
âLet me tell you something son, the driver donât pick the car. Â The car picks the driver. Â Itâs a mystical bond between man and machine,â Uncle Bobby B, as he so playfully called himself, stated, waving at his family nearby. Â I couldnât help but ponder his statement, finding it to be true and oddly, poetic. Â Maybe the creepy guy wasnât all that bad to coin such an amazing statement.
After walking around for a moment, looking at all the falling apart junk around us as Sam continued to âtalkâ with Bobby, I stopped. Â Just in the back was parked a sexy, sleek looking vehicle hiding off next to an old bug that I couldnât help my squeal in delight as my heart stopped. It was an old time Camaro.
âOh man, Sam,â I got his attention as Sam immediately perked up, seeing exactly what I saw. Â We both approached, my hands immediately running along the side of the car, up the hood to the top. Â The yellow paint job with racing strips could use a little buffering, but man oh man, was it nice.
âWhat do you think?â
Sam didnât answer as he opened the door, sitting inside of the car. Â I looked over the inside, impressed that the interior wasnât completely run down. Â Bobby B was yelling for someone, apparently unsure of the car. Â Something about never seeing it before, but I watched as Sam rubbed off the dirt on the steering wheel, revealing an unusual symbol. Â The obvious woah wasnât missed as we both admired the beaut in front of us.
âHow much?â Samâs dad didnât hesitate to ask, seeing how both of us where drooling over the vehicle.
âWell, considering the semi-classic nature of the vehicle-â
âSemi? Â Dude, this thing is vintage. Â Semi ainât cutting it,â I defended. Â Bobby wasnât phased as he continued with his sentence I had cut off.
âAnd the sleek wheels and the custom paint job-â
âYeah, but the paints faded,â Sam cut him again, earning the reaction of the salesman to lean over to look through the window.
âYeah, but itâs custom.â
âItâs custom faded?â
âItâs your first car, I wouldnât expect you to understand.â
I rolled my eyes at that last statement as he continued before throwing out his random number of five grand. Â My jaw dropped as Sam looked ready for a spazz attack. Â And sure enough, his dad wasnât too thrilled about the offer, saying he wouldnât pay over four grand, but Bobby refused to take anything less than five, making Sam get out of the car. Â Sam tried to coin the term âcar picks his driverâ but Bobby wasnât listening. Instead, he tried to sell the bug next to the Camaro.
âThereâs a Fiesta with racing stripes over there.â
I giggled as Sam said he didnât want it, shutting the door in a defeated manner. Â Without warning, the passenger door of the Camaro opened suddenly, hitting the bug next to it and forcing the horn to go off. Â I couldnât help but laugh at the scene as the salesman seemed at a loss for words, saying he could get the dings removed. He laughed but I could tell he was a bit perturbed.
Again, Bobby tried again, pointing out another vehicle. Â I followed Bobby, hoping to see if something else would catch my eye. Suddenly, a loud screech pierced our ears as we suddenly ducked, the windshields and glass on all the vehicles suddenly exploded into a shrapnel shower. Â I tapped the side of my head, dazed, as I looked at all the pieces on the ground. Â I even felt a sting in my arm, a few pieces lodging themselves into my skin. Â But other than that, I was perfectly fine. Couldnât say the same for Uncle Bobby B as he suddenly turned, holding up four fingers and practically screaming out the price he would take for the Camaro.
âYes!â Samâs whisper of excitement had me smile as his dad went with the salesman to settle the deal. We both practically ran for the car, Sam getting in the driverâs seat as I opened the passenger, sitting in. Â I looked over the dash and looked at Sam.
âBaby needs a washing. But I am amazed at the condition itâs in. Â Just a gorgeous vehicle.â
âThanks.â
The sudden omission had me pause, staring at Sam as he watched his dad take the title, waving at us to collect the keys.
âFor what?â
âWithout you spotting me, I wouldnât have gotten this car. Â You had no reason to at all, being new and all. Â But youâre a pretty cool person. Â And a cool friend. Â Which I hope lasts a long time,â Sam said as we both got out of the car. Â I just chuckled as I leaned over the top of the car, choosing my words carefully.
âSometimes you gotta put your trust in someone before anyone will trust you. Â And you are like a little bro to me already, so yeah, I hope this friendship will last as well. Â Just donât do anything stupid,â I smiled big as he immediately ran to his dad, saying he will get our stuff. Â I laughed, having forgot for a moment about his promise to take me home. Â Which I wasnât going to argue. Â I wanted to see this bad boy in action.
