i have to say that if an in-character GAY Zuko was to be romantically interested in any other boy in the show, it would certainly be Aang.
He seems to be mostly annoyed by Sokka, but they still have a great friendship. In fact, friendship between them started because they both share a feeling of inherent duty to those around them, and a need to regain their honor when they felt they've lost it. In the movie, this pattern follows. Zuko seems annoyed with Sokka most of the time, but still likes him a lot. There's even a joke about Zuko telling Sokka he needs to "accept his death with honor", because they're about to go into battle and Sokka is afraid. If anything, Zuko and Sokka have a the brotherly relationship, where Zuko is a gives advice and is a male role model for Sokka. I could also get into the fact that I think Sokka would not be equipped to deal with the emotional support Zuko needs, but this is more my own speculation and not entirely based in canon.
As for Jet, Zuko was down to help him when he saw the injustice regarding their meals on the boat to Ba Sing Se, but when Jet asks Zuko to join the freedom fighters, Zuko refuses. To be quite honest, Zuko is entirely uninterested in Jet as a person. He doesn't care for him at all, while Jet projects himself and his past onto Zuko. Jet, to me, has this "lone wolf" complex, and Zuko suffers from that, but he just completed an entire arc in Book 2 where he rejects help from Iroh and then realizes he needs Iroh's help. I see the appeal of "toxic Jetko" I guess, but Jetko only comes off as one-sided to me, and I don't really like stories where Zuko never heals or gets better personally (it completely defeats the purpose of his character to me).
AFAIK he never interacts with any other boy else his age. If we're counting the movie, he might have had the hots for Tagah before getting BTFOd by him.
now i don't ship them as they are in the show, but here is a bunch of propaganda for the foundation of what could be when they're adults, or in an au where they're aged together.
BUT AANG
1.) Starts the series obsessively chasing after him (yes, for nonromantic reasons, but the irony if they end up a couple as adults)
2.) A couple Freudian slips here and there "Back of Azula, he's mine" and when June asks if he's tracking down his girlfriend, he responds "it's not her i'm after, it's the bald monk she's travelling with" (IRONY!!!)
3.) In the same episode as above, excessive focus on Zuko and Aang dancing together while fighting, to parallel when they actually do the dragon dance together later in the series.
4.) After realizing Ozai will never love or accept the real him, he goes to find and help Aang learn Firebending.
5.) When rejected by the rest of the gaang, "Why aren't you saying anything. You said you thought we could be friends 🥺😢"
6.) "Where's that upbeat attitude you were talking about 😉"
7.) Zuko still has a lot pride and reservations, but he still dances when Aang asks him to TWICE. Clearly the idea of dancing makes him uncomfortable, because when they show it, and Sokka points out that they're dancing, he gets angry at him.
Shoutout to loungefly for this also:
8.) After the dragon dance, he tells Aang that the source of his new powered up Firebending is helping him, and to restore balance.
9.) "I couuuuld, uh, chase you around a while and try to capture you. 😏"
10.) this
11.) smiling when aang shows up in the ember island play.
12.) Zuko spends the entire first half of the finale deeply worried for aang because he has to face and kill Ozai, the man who abused and disfigured him. </3
13.) doesn't even gaf about toph's venting to him he's too worried about Aang 😭
14.) "And now..." "And now we're friends" Zuko looks away all bashfully "yeah, we are friends"
15.) when confronting Ozai: "we need to replace it with an era of peace and kindness" but when standing right next to Aang at his coronation: "but, together, we can build a new era of love and peace"
16.) "There's only one person important enough to interrupt the Firelord's council" and then he immediately goes to help Aang.
Hi, so I like to do genderswaps—I like figuring out how it may change character dynamics. Anyway I was doing this with Zuko and Azula, and personally? I think Fem!Zuko could be joining Katara at the heavily parentified sister table.
It's hard to explain but I feel as though Azula's regular "I despise you for the favoritism you receive and taking my mother away but despite this I do long for your praise/care" relationship with Zuko would inevitably end up combining with "You are the closest thing I have to a mother so I am going to subconsciously (maybe even consciously) cling to you" in a world where their genders are swapped.
And Zuko's obsession with honor and responsibility in early seasons very easily ends up translating into, "I resent you for the favoritism you receive but our mother is gone, so as your older sister and the only woman (girl, you are only 16) left in our family it's my duty to step up and take care of you".
So I just read this passage from the Avatar, the Last Airbender: The Reckoning of Roku and it raises one hilarious question:
Did Gyatso actually succeed in making "Flameyo, Hotman" a legit slang term in the Fire Nation? 😳
OR… (and please let this be true because it’s too funny) did he just totally make it up and teach it to Aang as a prank? Like, imagine Aang going around saying “Flameyo, Hotman!” and everyone’s just like 🤨 because it’s not even a thing 😂
Gyatso would 100% do that to mess with him. Never underestimate his dedication, indeed!

katara was the emotional backbone, moral compass, AND unpaid therapist of the gaang and we all just accepted that??
Because tell me why this girl was out here fighting a literal war, mastering bloodbending trauma, carrying generational grief, AND still making sure everyone drank water and talked about their feelings 😭
Any time the group was about to absolutely fall apart, Katara would be like
“hey maybe let’s process this”
and suddenly everyone’s stable again for five minutes.
She was the healer, the mom friend, the moral authority, the rage holder, and somehow also the softest person in the room. Like the emotional labor she was doing?? Astronomical.
And don’t get me started on how she had to keep Sokka alive emotionally while he was surviving on sarcasm and delusion.
Katara deserved:
✔ naps
✔ peace
✔ at least ONE day without babysitting trauma
I’m seriously not good at writing reviews about anything😅
So I watched the movie with my friend and it was honestly underwhelming… the animation was the best thing about it, the characters were feeling off, Sokka felt like only being there for comedic relief and Zuko was just kinda there, Aang was entering avatar state constantly and literally needed Tagah’s help who was frozen for 5000 years and barely conscious at that mountain
Katara and Toph felt most like them
And there was this scene at the beginning where Aang fights with the denied and this one lady says who they are and Aang looks surprised like he never heard of them and then katara says that the denied are growing in power like everyone knew all along? Idk maybe I just misunderstood something
Aang was seriously having a tunnel vision for that staff, it made sense but he was obsessed (?) to the point of just leaving them in the storm🤷🏼♀️
And I either missed when they said how long ago Sonam was the avatar or they got that Tagah was frozen for 5000 years out of nowhere
And there was this spirit Pumba
The movie just felt kinda rushed
What I liked though was the animation like I said, the fighting scenes and how they included Sokka into it (katara freezing part of his boomerang to create a club (?))
My friend was also laughing at old Zuko
(and there was tagah glowing like freaking Tamatoa from Moana😆)
So generally it was quite fun but it still was underwhelming
Ps: my friend also called tagah red riding hood when he had the hood of his cloak on
I wish there were was a scene or two where it is Sokka who has to pull Aang out of the avatar state frenzy.
Maybe Katara isn’t around for some reason (dealing with an active threat or she was just too far away) and it's Sokka that has to step up. because I do like the gradual growth of his reaction of aang in the avatar state going from complete fear to not leaving the area to stay with aang and I think it would have been a nice ed to have him be the one to pull aang out of it one time.
Not because I want to undermine Kataang because they are great. I do not want to ship sokka and Aang. But I just think it would have really added another layer to Sokka and Aang’s friendship besides them being silly and having fun together. I don’t think they really have any introspective moments with just each other like taht and I think one or 2 scenes like this would have deepened their friendship immensely (not that’s it’s not already great!)
Just Sokka deciding that Katara’s not here and Aang needs help now and so he’s got to do it. Every instinct he has is telling him to back away but he’s got to push through because Aang is his best friend, his brother and he’s not going to leave him.
I just think that would have been a nice little bow on their friendship arc with sokka being the more distrusting and harder to win over of the siblings. Like Kind of the inverse of Zuko and Katara’s friendship.
Like can you just imagine Sokka going; “ I got you buddy, I got you I’m right here” as he grips Aang tightly because he’s not the best at comforting words and and so all he can do is hold Aang close and remind him that he’s there that he’ll always be there for him.
