So I have a question about this Firelady Katara controversy. I’ve seen people say being Firelady would be oppressive to Katara because of everything the Fire Nation has done to the Avatar world.
Here’s my problem, I’m a Nigerian and for those who don’t know, Nigeria was colonized by the British until 1960. If a Nigerian who moved to the UK and became a naturalized citizen decided that they wanted to become UK prime minister, would that be oppressive? Would it be oppressive for a Nigerian to become the Prime Minister of a nation that once colonized their homeland?
Or the United States (I’m not American) formerly enslaved Africans, so was Barack Obama becoming the first African American president oppressive? Since Africans used to be enslaved by the US.
Because this seems to be the logic behind the complaints about Katara having power over the Fire Nation and becoming a world leader with international reach. I mean, if this was the case, why didn’t she say she was not going to help that village in Book 3 since it would be helping the Fire Nation? Seems like she just saw people who needed help and wanted to help.
Personally, I think Katara gaining power over the Fire Nation would be a kind of poetic justice. I saw someone point out that it would be a really full circle moment for the two people who FireLord Azulon wanted to have killed within the same year ending up taking his throne and then working together to tear down everything he and his predecessors had built.
I don’t know, I just don’t see it as oppressive 🤷🏾♀️

I find this recent discourse for atla really interesting cuz like look at the end of the day the non canon ship gets more love in fandom typically cuz theres more to explore with it fandom is for what you dont get in canon and all that so historically imo Zutara has dominated in the ship war more people seem to like it. So why the sudden flip?
Well theres been a rise of a respect canon cuz its canon people so that is a factor but i dont think thats the main thing .
I think basically its 2 things
1. There were a bunch of people who heard alot about zutara but hadnt watched avatar or had a long time ago and were not big into fandom who were expecting to see alot more content between Zuko and Katara given the popularity and didnt get it it got over hyped to them when they watched it /rewatched it. And so now fully divorced from the original atla fandom and their experiences the ship doesnt make sense.
You didnt see the voice actors ship it or the creators mention it or even the animation thing where they were all chibi and in school and they made a love pentagon with Zuko Aang katara and the blue spirit who somehow was his own character despite being Zuko.
To be fair you dont have to the source material is enough to interpret things but without that context shippers seem more insane so its a unfair reading of the fan base's attachment to the ship. And of course all all long running fandoms they do start fuelling their interest from fandom more than canon when theres not enough content and it becomes its own thing not really reflective of canon which is fine.
But perhaps some forgot how far theyd deviated from canon in their portrayals while still fueling discourse which both confused those outside the fandom and made them frustrated .
2. They saw the clips of the new movie or all of the new movie and saw Aang as attractive
I don't say this to be dismissive but in fandom it very common that the ships that get popular are with characters who get accepted as attractive or with characters who are considered relatable or are otherwise projected on in some way. Katara Toph Zuko and Sokka were all some combo of this Aang tho wasnt. So Aang ships didnt tend to be as popular outside of the kataang shippers from my experience.
Then we get this poster of Adult Gaang
And this design of Aang in Legend of Korra
And tbh neither were very popular while the other designs were very well received
People hadnt been as curious about adult Aang as a design compared to some other characters (Zuko) so there wasnt a super popular fan design that got latched on to either. So that did not help with the shippability of aang.
But then the movie comes out this the redesign
And people like this look more
And then the movie leaks and people see clips and suddenly
Oh no hes hot now we getting thirst traps
Now you could say hold on now people have made intimate objects and fish and lions and horses redesigned to be hot people.
And thats true.
But there are certain personality types that get those redesigns and they typically aren't the sweet peace loving types.
And now finally in 2026 Aangs shippability is getting a bit of a boom and so the first ship that gets looked at is the one that got the most attention the one that was involved in a ship for over a decade aka kataang.
This is not to say that no one had any Aang ships just that they werent as popular as ships with other members and when they might have been typically.
For example
Aang has just as many parallels and thematic connections with Zuko as Katara does if not more. Their ancestors are linked Katara tried to talk Zuko out of his path in Ba sing Se but Aang tried in S1 when Zuko rescued him in the blue spirit first. Their backstory episodes are told together Aang even cuts ties with Roku in the comics because he suggests Aang might have to kill Zuko.
In many fandoms that kinda thing is the basis of at the very least a very strong friendship that down the line could blossom into a really popular ship that dominates a fandom
Can't really deny that but in spite of that Zukaang didnt get much traction.
And i think it didnt because people just werent that interested in shipping aang at least not the masses but thats changing now and im curious what new ships will now start getting more popularity. Im personally hoping for more aang ships.
It honest-to-God pisses me off like I stg you have to be blind and deaf if your takeway is that The Southern Raiders is a genuinely pro Kataang episode.
Never bother to answer zutaranti again, she was comparing zuko to the KKK, check twitter 😭
Oh, I have no interest in having a back and forth with them. I've seen the receipts, and there is absolutely nothing they have to say that interests me whatsoever, which is why I blocked them the moment they showed up in the tags. The only reason I replied on that thread was to call out their bullshit, but make no mistake, I have no intention of having a discussion with them about anything.
i have to say that if an in-character GAY Zuko was to be romantically interested in any other boy in the show, it would certainly be Aang.
He seems to be mostly annoyed by Sokka, but they still have a great friendship. In fact, friendship between them started because they both share a feeling of inherent duty to those around them, and a need to regain their honor when they felt they've lost it. In the movie, this pattern follows. Zuko seems annoyed with Sokka most of the time, but still likes him a lot. There's even a joke about Zuko telling Sokka he needs to "accept his death with honor", because they're about to go into battle and Sokka is afraid. If anything, Zuko and Sokka have a the brotherly relationship, where Zuko is a gives advice and is a male role model for Sokka. I could also get into the fact that I think Sokka would not be equipped to deal with the emotional support Zuko needs, but this is more my own speculation and not entirely based in canon.
As for Jet, Zuko was down to help him when he saw the injustice regarding their meals on the boat to Ba Sing Se, but when Jet asks Zuko to join the freedom fighters, Zuko refuses. To be quite honest, Zuko is entirely uninterested in Jet as a person. He doesn't care for him at all, while Jet projects himself and his past onto Zuko. Jet, to me, has this "lone wolf" complex, and Zuko suffers from that, but he just completed an entire arc in Book 2 where he rejects help from Iroh and then realizes he needs Iroh's help. I see the appeal of "toxic Jetko" I guess, but Jetko only comes off as one-sided to me, and I don't really like stories where Zuko never heals or gets better personally (it completely defeats the purpose of his character to me).
AFAIK he never interacts with any other boy else his age. If we're counting the movie, he might have had the hots for Tagah before getting BTFOd by him.
now i don't ship them as they are in the show, but here is a bunch of propaganda for the foundation of what could be when they're adults, or in an au where they're aged together.
BUT AANG
1.) Starts the series obsessively chasing after him (yes, for nonromantic reasons, but the irony if they end up a couple as adults)
2.) A couple Freudian slips here and there "Back of Azula, he's mine" and when June asks if he's tracking down his girlfriend, he responds "it's not her i'm after, it's the bald monk she's travelling with" (IRONY!!!)
3.) In the same episode as above, excessive focus on Zuko and Aang dancing together while fighting, to parallel when they actually do the dragon dance together later in the series.
4.) After realizing Ozai will never love or accept the real him, he goes to find and help Aang learn Firebending.
5.) When rejected by the rest of the gaang, "Why aren't you saying anything. You said you thought we could be friends 🥺😢"
6.) "Where's that upbeat attitude you were talking about 😉"
7.) Zuko still has a lot pride and reservations, but he still dances when Aang asks him to TWICE. Clearly the idea of dancing makes him uncomfortable, because when they show it, and Sokka points out that they're dancing, he gets angry at him.
Shoutout to loungefly for this also:
8.) After the dragon dance, he tells Aang that the source of his new powered up Firebending is helping him, and to restore balance.
9.) "I couuuuld, uh, chase you around a while and try to capture you. 😏"
10.) this
11.) smiling when aang shows up in the ember island play.
12.) Zuko spends the entire first half of the finale deeply worried for aang because he has to face and kill Ozai, the man who abused and disfigured him. </3
13.) doesn't even gaf about toph's venting to him he's too worried about Aang 😭
14.) "And now..." "And now we're friends" Zuko looks away all bashfully "yeah, we are friends"
15.) when confronting Ozai: "we need to replace it with an era of peace and kindness" but when standing right next to Aang at his coronation: "but, together, we can build a new era of love and peace"
16.) "There's only one person important enough to interrupt the Firelord's council" and then he immediately goes to help Aang.

When you reduce Katara or Korra to an aesthetic prize to be won by a "reluctant hero" you aren't honoring their grit, their heart, or their immense trauma. You are objectifying them.
You cannot perceive a female character's value unless she is explicitly serving a "romantic" dynamic that you curated on your fanfiction dashboard.
There I fixed it for them.
This is literally the text of the canon relationship for Katara.
I don’t personally have a super-strong investment in Azula as a character, but seeing people say she’s an irredeemable monster and a psycho made me sympathize with her. I think people only claim she’s irredeemable because she was “mean,” especially to Zuko, which I personally couldn’t give a shit about. Furthermore, it seems a lot of people who argue Azula could never be redeemed like to claim or imply that she was born evil or naturally evil. No, she wasn’t shaped by abuse from Ozai! No, she wasn’t shaped by harsh indoctrination from an imperialist society! No, she wasn’t neglected by Ursa or Iroh! She’s just BAD, BAD, BAD.
Azula fans often try to counter these claims by proving the author’s intentions weren’t for Azula to be “born evil” or finding canon evidence she was abused or traumatized by her upbringing. Honestly, though, I personally won’t bother. Why? Because the people who argue that Azula was “born evil” are essentially saying that the moral of ATLA, a story about imperialism and genocide, is, “The only real villains are the ones who were born evil and have no redeeming qualities at all whatsoever!!!1” which is just. . .laughably bad in and of itself.
Often those of us critical of Aa.ng get accused of "holding him to a higher standard" than we hold other characters to and maybe I'll make a bigger post explaining this but simply put, we're not holding him to an unfair standard. The narrative holds him to an unfair standard, but it's one that's actually a lower standard than it holds the other characters to, not a higher one.
Compared to the other characters, A.ang is held to a lower standard for his behavior, so if it seems like we're going too hard on him, it's not cause we think he's the devil or that his actions are worse than other characters, it's necessary compensation for the fact the story lets him get away with things it would not let other characters get away with.
This isn't to say he can't have flaws or do anything wrong, main characters NEED flaws and they NEED to make mistakes. The problem with A.ang is they give him flaws (good) and then don't do much with them in terms of pushing him towards change and improving himself (bad). Seeing characters make mistakes and grow from them makes them more likable and relatable. Seeing characters make mistakes and not grow or change and get rewarded anyway makes them less likable and less relatable, hence why A.ang declined in popularity in the last season, because it should've been his biggest season for growth as the main character and he stays stagnant for the whole season.
