Portrait of Ivan Ivanovich Chemodanov and the Russian mission to Venice during the Deluge (1655-1660)

Giraldi, who had been chamberlain to Prince Alexander Charles Vasa (1614-1634) around 1634 and had resided in Poland for a long time, attempted to communicate with them in Polish. However, the ambassadors, although they understood and spoke it perfectly, refused to use it "for the sake of grandeur" (per maggior grandezza). Negotiations with the Republic of Venice were unsuccessful. Leaving Venice on March 11, 1657, the ambassadors returned to Russia via Tyrol, Innsbruck, Cologne, and the Netherlands. The most important memento of this mission is a portrait of Chemodanov, painted in Florence by Justus Sustermans (oil on canvas, 120 x 97 cm, inv. 1890, 2371) …

Funeral banner of Eustachy Kurcz

Eustachy Litwinowicz Kurcz (d. 1647) was castellan of Vitebsk from 1639 to 1647, in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (now Belarus). In Syanno, near Vitebsk, he and his wife Raina (Regina), née Wołłowicz, founded a Franciscan monastery and church in 1609. Similarly, with his third wife, Zuzanna, née Tyszkiewicz, he founded a Franciscan monastery and church in Grodno in 1635. The banner, made in 1648, is part of the collection of the Moscow Kremlin Museums (oil and gold on damask and velvet, 160 x 120 cm, inv. 3N-327). The Latin inscription on the reverse confirms the identity of the donor depicted on the obverse (DOM / PIISSIMIS MANIBVS ILLVSTRISSIMI DOMINI / EVSTACHII LITWINOWICZ KVRCZ CASTELLANI / WITEBSCESIS: […] ANNO M. DC XL. VIII).
