I'm enjoying Project Compass and wondering if you have any Chiss or Ascendancy headcanons you want to share (without being too spoilery). One of my favorite things about thranto fandom is all the different takes on the Ascendancy!
I honestly planned on having this entire story take place on a ship, with as minimal world-building as possible... which clearly failed. 😅
So now I’ve found myself using a blend of SWTOR/Legends/Canon/made-up stuff as seen on wookieepedia/sw databank/my brain and the general internet at large to flesh things out since I have literally no idea whatsoever about the Chiss. Which, coincidentally was why I was so concerned about writing this pairing in the first place. I am a bull in a china shop right now, and everything’s going to get broken.
As for their exact hierarchy, I think they’re not terribly far off from the Empire in terms of military structure and the admiralty making a lot of decisions at the behest of the ruling families. I’ve kept the concept of each ruling family having specific affairs they specialize in and oversee. I do, however think the Aristocra is a many-headed snake, and some of the heads are trying to bite off the other ones. I’ll be expanding a little bit on the more political elements when Thrawn and Ezra make their way to Copero, the Mitth family’s homeworld per the legends contingency.
As far as personal headcanons go, I’m kind of stumbling into them as I write.
But, I will share this one, which will give you some insight on the story:
The Chiss are a very prideful, xenophobic species. I've theorized that due to this, their Sight is tied to their emotional openness (and empathy), which declines as they become adults, and is almost never seen in males due to the way emotional vulnerability is considered a weakness. It’s a trickle-down effect from the Aristocra, hidden in details I’ve mentioned about festivals, parties, and other grandiose events hiding the fissures and cracks in their overall instability. They are far from Jedi or Sith, and will never be the lightsaber-swinging duelists their human counterparts are. They perceive the Force without the nuances of light or dark, and I am characterizing them as a true neutral or gray species within the Force, overall. I am also considering that perhaps there were more Navigators in the past, but the ruling families may have made decisions that led to their decline in number and the potency of their abilities (due to the sociological fallout of their political decisions).
