choosing a favourite fic from my best friend’s catalogue is honestly a huge ask. every single one of dave’s fics is intensely intimate and beautifully crafted. i limited myself to the two i have bookmarked, but i recommend every single one wholeheartedly. i legitimately weighed up the humour values of getting a #1 Psythe Fan mug after reading his fic.
singing the same old song (same old song) (rated g) is the best intermission/stabdads fic i have ever read. the midnight crew have done the unimaginable: they’ve grown old. through various shenanigans, each of the crew and snowman have picked up kids, and they’re trying to lie low in a backwards part of america as their retirement.
it’s difficult to describe what makes this fic so spectacular. i think it’s mostly diamond droog’s narration. immediately we’re thrown into the action, dd watching as his kid (aradia) hassles his boyfriend (crowbar) in the hopes she can see the morgue. dd handles aradia and crowbar and just about everyone he comes into contact with in smooth passive voice, perfectly evoking the noir vibe that homestuck’s intermissions shoot for and invariably abandon for the funnier option. he’s jack nicholson if he were classy enough to leave chinatown as a stand alone movie.
not that same old song isn’t funny, because it is! it’s really funny, sharp as a dagger and told as though we’re meandering through a crime scene with a scotch in one hand and a cigarette in the other, and maybe this isn’t quite life and death anymore, but life and love are somehow even higher stakes. i’m confident i’ll recommend this to every person who mentions the intermission gang in my vicinity for a very long time.
Venus in Aries (explicit) sold me on jaderose, utterly and completely. i think it may have sold me on jade completely. rose and jade are priestesses for the goddess of time, aradia, and in order to properly worship her on the holy day, they must worship each other, because time is precious and to enjoy it to its fullest is the best way they can honour her. the world that exists in the background is so intriguing and makes me want 100,000 words of this!
and it’s fucking hot. there’s something magical about rose’s persistence with the words of the ceremony, even though jade’s being very distracting. and the utter devotion between the three women is palpable throughout. it’s also fun! in a way that’s surprising for what could have been solemn if jade were not the pov character. i legitimately would be religious if this were an option! mostly i’m in love with the sincere friendship between jade and rose and this remains one of my favourite f/f(/f) fics.
