"But Arwen went forth from the House, and the light of her eyes was quenched, and it seemed to her people that she had become cold and grey as nightfall in winter that comes without a star. Then she said farewell to Eldarion, and to her daughters, and to all whom she had loved; and she went out from the city of Minas Tirith and passed away to the land of Lórien, and dwelt there alone under the fading trees until winter came. Galadriel had passed away and Celeborn also was gone, and the land was silent.
'There at last when the mallorn-leaves were falling, but spring had not yet come, she laid herself to rest upon Cerin Amroth; and there is her green grave, until the world is changed, and all the days of her life are utterly forgotten by men that come after, and elanor and niphredil no more east of the sea.'
Here ends this tale, as it has come to us from the South; and with the passing of Evenstar no more is said in this book of the days of old."
The fate of Arwen upon Aragorn's death. Lord of the Rings Appendix A, V. Here Follows a Part of the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen.
Someday I WILL write a fic that builds on the incredibly queer dwarf culture that Tolkien hints at in the Appendices
>:)
For those who don't know, "My One and True Enemy" was my first Haladriel fic, published right after S2 ended. I've evolved a lot in my writing since then, so I sometimes go back to this and improve it. I just finished a thorough revision, adjusting dialogue and descriptions in all chapters. It's essentially the same fic I published between October and November, but improved and much longer! We went from initial 15K words to 18K words. There are 3,000 new words!
I encourage you to read it a try (or reread it). You'll like it 😍

When you read LotR, do you read the Appendices?
Yes
No
Appendix A ✨ Thoughts ✨
Ok yes, I said I wouldn't do full me treatments for the Appendices, like I have before, lmao...but half-true because it won't be as thorough. Just a few things that stuck out to me.
Overall, dayum, this needs to be a series, or a film trilogy. So so soooo much incredible storytelling here. (But we need more Gollum apparently? Whole other discussion, lol, anywho!)
And full disclosure: my first read of the Appendices 🫣 it's my "I used to skip the songs and poems", lol.
We shall see what I do or don't do with the rest of the Appendices 😅
Nice to get a Númenor overview, and I'm glad it's here for readings who don't get to the Silm/Akallabêth. Sort of like "Of The Rings of Power and The Third Age", interesting to get that more zoomed out version of a known story.
Omg. Omg. Omg. The Kinstrife. Imo it's really a tragic example of cycles repeating through history...yeah, turning your nose up at (and far beyond that) those without "pure blood" is Kingsmen BS. That turned out to be incredibly harmful. Just goes to underscore a core belief of mine: it's not who you are, it's what you DO.
Dayuuum, the Witch King and Co truly were a menace to Arnor 😅 Gives extra meaning to Merry striking that blow with that sword, the poetic justice of an emblem of those he terrorized coming to back to (literally) bite him 💅🏻 [And Éowyn struck the final blow, it will always be a Tag Team, please and ty 😌]. And yep, another small object with big big big power, history, and significance in Tolkien. At the same time, Arnor was in a weaker position in the face of that terror because of their own internal squabbling (pettiness, power-hinger? ...I report, you decide, lol). Don't help the enemy out with internal division, just sayin' 🙂↕️
Aragorn and Arwen is juuuuust....😭😭😭. The echoes of Beren and Lúthien, the layers in which that's interwoven: truly striking. "But my doom might be hers"...way to predict your own downfall there gal 😭 But always the humor as well with Tolkien, I was just cracking up with Gilraen: "bucko, she is way out of your league", Aragorn to Elrond: "...did my mom talk to you about this or something?" 🤣🤣🤣
Yooo Durin's Line, Tolkien really wasn't kidding about the hardiness of this race. Dain II 😱 Lineage and serving justice (...or taking vengeance? ...again I report, you decide, lol) are big themes. The change purse is just a perfect image, given...dwarves, and their strengths // flip side of the coin of their vulnerability (craft, trade, active commerce and...greed 😮💨). Once again the importance of small objects in the legendarium!
I would be remiss to not tip my hat to Eorl and the Rohirrim 🙂↕️ Quite a hardy folk in their own way, as well. I do notice how there's no mention of how um...there were people living there...and that would bring big issues down the line. It highlights how this is a history, written by people with a bias (like we all have, in some way), who will apply their own slant and editorialize in terms of what they do and don't include (intentionally or unintentionally).
