See chapter 2 of "That Time Hermione Cast the Workskin Charm on Tom's Diary" https://archiveofourown.org/works/87338671/chapters/232450106 for the full tutorial.
So on Tumblr people LOVE creating badges and icons and all that jazz whenever Ao3 does something. That's great, but how in the WORLD do you even, y'know, add them to your bio? Hell, do we even know where your bio even is?? I didn't for a while, and now I do, so to help all of the reader's, writers, and stalkers on Ao3, I have made this tutorial to help YOU(yes you) add badges to your Profile, and turn it into something like this!
Finding our Profile
First! we have to know where in the world our bio is. To find it ( on both Desktop and mobile) , simpily follow this map
Sign into your account. Very important step.
In the top right corner, click into your profile, and find the button labled "Preferences",
In there, we can find a button with the text "Edit My Profile" ,
Congrats! You can now edit your profile and make it cool!
..But now what? See, Ao3 uses a coding language called HTML5, and to properly structure your bio, we have to know a bit about it.
HTML5
All code, headings, and text are inside of brackets like this: <> </> . Using these brackets, we tell Ao3 what the texts effect would be.
For now we are going to focus on 5 effects in total : Paragraphs, Headers, Bold, Italics, and Images.
Something VERY important to remember is to spell and close tags properly, otherwise Ao3 gets confused and everything looks wrong.
Headers
To create headers, we use tags like <h1> </h1> , <h2> </h2> , going all the way to h6. h6 is the smallest header, and h6 is the largest header. This is how we can add the big words in our bio. For my bio, I used h3, and h4.
Badges!!
We first must have the image link, in my example I am using the Ao3 out of beta badge, from the official ao3 updates blog (the link is as follows: https://media.archiveofourown.org/news/ao3-updates/2026-04-leaving-beta/badge-english.png ) .
the code to add it is this : < img arc="https://media.archiveofourown.org/news/ao3-updates/2026-04-leaving-beta/badge-english.png">.
Now we can leave it like that, but then the badge would be MASSIVE. So we can change the size, by adding in height = "75px" width="75px" . this means our Image will now load in at 75 x 75 pixels.
We can also add one extra thing to make it a tad bit better: adding alt text if the badge doesn't load, or if someone is using a screen reader. We can add such like this : alt="our alternate text goes here"
The completed ao3 badge code will look like this : < img arc="https://media.archiveofourown.org/news/ao3-updates/2026-04-leaving-beta/badge-english.png" height="75px" width="75px" alt="Circular badge with the words 'I was here for beta' with an AO3 logo"> . To add more badges, simpily change the link to the corresponding badge image :)
About Me
pretty self explanatory, this section we can put information like nicknames, pronouns, timezones and the like. I personally put trivia and random tibits as well.
Tags used here are commonly <br/> , <b> </b> , and <I> <I/> .
Fandoms
again, pretty explanatory, we don't need to know any extra code then what we already know, simpily making it a list, and adding emojis to the favorites is enough pizazz for most.
now all thats left to do, is save and...
You did it!!! Hopefully this post helped you make your own Profile page, and can now add badges, headings, and other cool things like a person who knows what they are doing(unlike me)! Feel free to add your own tips, and have a great rest of your week :D
What a step! How far we've come. But we ao3 folks are a particular bunch and we like what we like, and if you're anything like me [autistic] (and the many people I have encountered after the reveal) you might be missing the beta. Good news is I have a fix for you!!! I have worked with skins that change the header before and its not too difficult so I have crafted a little something you can add to your skin to bring back the classic ao3 look of familiarity. Just paste into the Custom css box of your site skin and, voila! Here you have this classic header.
I might refine this latter. It is not quite a one to one match, but the dependencies are really not noticeable when in use. Enjoy! I hope this helps someone.

haiii !! so sorry to bother you but is it possible for you to make a darker version of your pink skin.. if not i completely understand!!! just very bright lolz...
-someone who can'tcode
i've gotten quite a few asks requesting for another version of my site skin, but im too lazy to do all of them so here's a tutorial for anyone who wants to make an ao3 site skin / wants to use mine as a base.
Guide Basic CSS Structure: selector { property: value;} Example: body {background: #12cdef;} Common properties: Color: text color.
Install Firefox or a fork of it if you already use it. I personally use Waterfox.
Open the app
(Optional) Sign in to you Firefox account if you want to sync bookmarks/history.
Go to Settings > Search > Default search engine (they should be the first option in each menu).
You'll get a list of pre-existing search engines. Select "Add search engine" at the bottom.
Give it whatever name you like.
Copy one of the two URLs under the Keep reading in the "Search string URL" box.
Third box about suggestion API is not relevant and can be ignored.
Save your changes.
Check that your newly created search engine appears and select it if necessary.
Add app icon to home screen.
If your phone allows it, customize the icon by renaming it and changing the image for the AO3 logo.
Log in to your AO3 account
Enjoy your dedicated AO3 browser.
NB: as long as this AO3 search engine is selected, this browser will only return AO3 results unless a) you switch back to duckduckgo/ecosia/etc., or b) you type in a complete url with domain like [wikipedia.org]. Other browsers are not affected by this at all.
I have recently been getting spam comments on my newly posted fics with very degrading language, all from unregistered users. If you have also recieved these (with content along the lines of "your writing is shit and you'll spend christmas alone" among other insults) I'd like to reassure you it's most likely AI generated and a bot, though the vibes are definitely rancid and could definitely ruin someone's day if they're in a bad space. I also want to inform/remind people on how to change permissions on all their fics at once!
How to Change Comment Permissions On All Your Fics At The Same Time
The first thing you'll do is log in if you aren't already.
Next, on your profile dashboard (or the dropdown), go to your "Works" tab. At the top of your works list, click the "Edit Works" button.
This will take you to a page to Edit Multiple Works! All of your fics will be in a neat list, organized by fandom, with a checkbox available beside each one. You can select only specific fics as well by checking their box, but what we'll do is hit the "All" button to select every fic on the list, and then the "Edit" button below it.
This will take you to a new page. If you have a lot of works (or are on mobile like me), you will have to scroll to the bottom of the page to see the boxes for editing. This looks a lot like the boxes you see when posting a new work, but BE AWARE that any changes in these fields will REPLACE what is in those fields in the works you've selected, and DELETE anything you had there previously. BE CAREFUL!
Note: Leaving all the fields blank will NOT change anything on your fics, so make sure there is nothing in these fields!
You will go to the last box, labeled as "Privacy". This shows your visibility, moderation, and comment settings.
Go to the section labeled "Who can comment on these works."
If you want to stop receiving any comments whatsoever, you can select "No one can comment".
If you want to allow comments ONLY from people who have registered on ao3 with an account, select "Only registered users can comment".
Do NOT change any of the other fields if this is the only thing you want to do!
When you're done, select "Update All Works" at the bottom. Now no one without an ao3 account will be able to leave a comment, meaning you will no longer receive any comments with (Guest) after them. Any guest comments you received before changing this setting WILL REMAIN, so don't worry about your existing comments!
And that's all! Do what you gotta do to keep your peace, guys. Happy holidays to those that celebrate, and i hope everyone has a good rest of their winter! Go forth with peace of mind!
