The Sole Tomato. This is the fruit of my #pandemicgardening labors this summer. I have pumpkins, yes, but they’re not ready. There are four pomegranates ripening on a long forgotten bush and though we did have four pluots, that was before the gardening began in earnest. It’s been the weirdest summer on record. I’m a teacher and summer is usually spent driving my kids around, going to swim meets, horse shows, and taking them to visit friends. It’s also a time I try to catch up on writing projects. This summer it’s been providing emotional support for my whole family and trying to stay sane. I’m not sure I succeeded at anything other than a few sunflowers, pumpkins and this one tomato. I’m fighting tears and a fruit fly infestation. The house is torn up and dirty as of course I didn’t finish projects I’d planned to in time. I start a new work assignment tomorrow and I have mixed feelings and despair. But I grew a tomato. I got my hands dirty. I tried new things and wrote in new genres. I’ve been mentoring and enjoying the experience. I’ve cuddled my dog and cats despite not really pleasing anyone else. It will be fine. Like mom says, it’ll all come out in the wash. Or the tomato. #teacher #amparenting #writingcommunity #amgardening #uncertainty https://www.instagram.com/p/CDf380vA5DX/?igshid=1dhqmvklkaqtj
Baby orange pumpkins ripening on the vine. Baby gray pumpkins plumping in the shade of their giant green canopy. Mammoth sunflowers taller than the house. And one transplanted teeny tomato. There have been challenges and successes in Ro’s experimental garden. My corn prematurely tasseled, my attempts to grow green onions and any types of flowers from seeds have failed, and we can’t keep up with the lettuce. I’ve revived a nearly dead hydrangea into a thriving shrubbery. It keeps me inspired. Every bit of greenery I’m responsible for is a victory. I even harvested poppy seeds and they’ve sprouted! I hope whenever you are, if you planted anything this year, I hope its inspired you! What’s the Point?
Think back to the last three years of your life. What are some of the essential things you've done every week since 5/24/2014? Eat, sleep, work, go to the bathroom? Sure, those are all guaranteed. But what else can you say you've done, guilt free and without fail, every single week for the past three years? And more than that, of those things, how many of them have no extrinsic value and very little obvious reward? If you're having a hard time even thinking of why you would do something like that, you may have some idea what it's like to write a weekly blog.
So why do I do it? Why have I sat down at my computer over 150 times these past three years, no matter what has been going on in my life, and poured my soul onto the keyboard for the whole world to judge? I don't get any money for it. I haven’t achieved any level of fame. It hasn't helped my writing career or my personal life. So what is it?

Baby: *sleeps through asshole older siblings being loud and obnoxious on way to bed*
Me: *cracks tab of energy drink*
Baby: *bolts upright in crib* OH THERE YOU ARE MOM. CAN YOU PICK ME UP? I LOVE YOU SO.
Me: ...... -.-
my life goal as a parent
... is to never have my children describe their relationship with me using words that could be interpreted as Linkin Park song lyrics.
