do you ever worry that your sad mixed-caste characters who didn't feel like they fit into their caste (e.g. askingalright) play into negative tropes and stereotypes surrounding mixed-race people?
Could you elaborate on that?
The answer to your direct question is ‘no that question never came to my mind’, but I’m not sure what more specifically you might be referring to?
(Also, did you possibly confuse my character with someone else? askingalright totally likes being green; peers and society weren’t always great and she’s had some other internal stuff, but she definitely does. And she isn’t particularly sad?)
I’m also a second generation immigrant, myself, so I think if anything I may have drawn a bit on that?
…Also I’m going to note that while to be clear I’m not mixed race and can’t speak to that, as a more general thing, while there’s definitely many tropes that are a problem, ‘plays into stereotypes’ is a statement I’d often be wary of? There’s definitely real problems it can point to, but it can also involve a kind of victim responsibling in some cases, or be used to attack portrayals of things that are in fact real and good to portray. And also it’s important to recognize differences between like, bad gross-stereotype stuff in media and properly recognizing-people-as-people representation of things that are totally real.
(To go with a possibly less charged example and a group I’m part of - ‘Russians drink vodka all the time’ is shallow-stereotype type thing (I feel like I’m lacking words here), but there’s totally real stuff about alcohol and Russian culture and history and stuff, and having characters drawing on that very valid and the opposite of a bad thing.)
You might know this but askingalright has anon off.
Whoops!
Thank you for telling me! Should hopefully be fixed now!
ooc: if you send an ask to this Tumblr, please say which character(s) it's for!
[Very imperialist countries centric. Also I don’t actually know things]
Now trying to think what would happen if Amentans found modern Earth.
On one hand, they outnumber us and have better tech. On the other hand, they have the things about only greys fighting and they would also have to send any people and tech they wanted to use through FTL transport, which would be a major bottleneck.
Of course we have nukes, though since we don’t have FTL we can’t nuke them and I’m not sure how much that helps on defense.
We know how to shoot down planes but I’m not sure about shooting down spaceships?
If we manage a spaceship and reverse engineering gets anywhere that might change matters. If once they find out about it they can get nukes working that seems pretty likely to change matters.
In the happiest version they’d just decide it was a better idea not to fight, we’d decide it was a better idea not to try shooting them anyway, and we could try like, peaceful coexistence negotiation type stuff.
I can potentially see some countries willing to take Amentan immigrants who’d accept say a two-child restriction (clearly not what Amentans really want but poorer people from credit system countries might still go for that) in exchange for tech info and stuff (assuming the Amentans would in fact season ok).
I could potentially see some Earth people interested in trying to live on the Amentan equator, if it was allowed? Not sure if it would be since they are hoping to be able to season it eventually.
Various greens (and Kantil!) would be super excited about there being casteless societies to study.
Not sure what they’d think about the pollution situation in er, the imperialist countries group. We don’t do their level of decontamination, clearly, and that includes our plumbers and garbage people and morticians, but we do like, have cleaning procedures. And while there are definitely family business it might be enough they can decide it doesn’t go far back enough?

Person of Interest + Amenta castes
Because obviously obscure fusions. (Thank you for contributions to d., who is great).
{Note, this is specifically borrowing the caste system, it is not currently borrowing the babies-related stuff}
[Warning some POI spoilers]
(Some background for not-POI people: Harold is a billionaire who lives on false identities who made an AI to help the government identify terrorists. It also identifies murders that are about to happen. Harold is currently trying to stop some of those. Nathan’s Harold’s college best friend and the official face of their tech company. John is an ex-CIA assassin who Harold enlists to help with the murder prevention. He has self worth issues. Carter is a police detective who gets involved. Kara was John’s CIA partner. She is not a nice person. Shaw is an ex-other-blackops assassin who before that was trying to be a doctor. Root is a hacker and worked as a murder-for-hire arranger. She is a zealot about the AI.)
Harold is purple, though basically no one knows this. He went to college as a green, and generally finds green most comfortable for himself (Finch is green in the sense that that’s what color hair he has, since not having a hair color at all stands out too much (though he might have done it the first time he met John?), and he decided to go for the comfort in picking.) A good amount of his identities are yellow, both for specific occupation reasons and because yellows tends to be less obtrusive. Wren is yellow, whoever he had at IFT was yellow. Crane is blue.
Nathan is blue (I was thinking green, because college, but I think d. correctly suggested blue.) He went to college with greens in an instance of ‘blues can do that kind of thing’. He got away with claiming to be IFT’s inventor because blue income and out of caste income cap thing, though a lot of people suspected he had a green or yellow (…what caste does do tech inventions…?) or a few he bribed to do the work and not take credit. I need a way to explain Will, who is clearly green, and Olivia is clearly blue, so possibly she is infertile and they got a (green) donor and were allowed to do this because blues and being able to promise to hire green tutors and all that. (There were a lot of suspicions that Nathan was trying to raise a replacement for his ‘secret greens’). Olivia might have a blue child from a previous marriage to make this work (for her).
Carter is grey - military, police, pretty straight forward. Taylor might be learning to be a dancer.
John is also grey (again, military). Groups like the CIA pick recruits partially based on being able to better deal with pollution, since it, well, comes up. I believe it was d’s suggestion that because this is John, it’s actually a thing that John is pretty regular pollution sensitive, he just suppresses for the job really well. (As in no one notices, not as in it doesn’t hurt him.)
Kara is properly blue, but she’s the result of an embarrassing affair type thing and was raised by yellows and expected to keep the blue thing a secret. She really hates yellow (the cultural expectations etc, not the people). She ran away and joined the circus joined the CIA.
d. suggested that Shaw is orange, which I wouldn’t have thought of but wow. This actually makes the doctor thing work better, since oranges have pretty strong expectation about emotion and care. Blackops in this verse takes recruits of all castes - expands the talent pool, good for undercover, and since they’re already doing highly illegal stuff that part doesn’t matter. She joins the ISA.
I was thinking Root is purple which is what fits her canon background. Was thinking about a version where Hanna was red. But no, I think it works better that Root is red (which, um, definitely works well with her ‘people are completely awful’ thing.) She maybe kept seeing Hanna because Hanna would leave the library around the time the garbage truck Root worked with was there (it seems canonical that red kids working can be a thing). Maybe Hanna did something nice (not touch involving) for her once. Root witnesses part of the kidnapping but doesn’t have a good way to report it and be listened to because red. She has identities in all sorts of castes.
The Machine itself does not discriminate by caste - it will produce red numbers (I presume even if reds aren’t citizens they must have some registry thing). However, Harold realized that if the ISA got a red number they would just kill the red without really trying to figure anything out (except if there might be others involved, anyway)(including if they were in fact the victim). So he programmed the Machine not to tell them the red numbers.
Root finding this out about the Machine goes to her feelings about it.
Harold is worried about the first time he gets a red number when working with John - John is grey after all. But John is, ah, not that kind of grey.
(I'm rereading what I read before.)
Makel Alasi: Squeeze. "My whole family would be such dead reds.
So has anyone done anything with this (wondering not demanding!) (also this as in reds) it sounds *fascinating*.
Afen runs away to university as mentioned. (Not sure how that works with everyone else existing but. Various ideas including non-related aus those are a thing...).
Makel is prob like pre-story Peka, singing as a passionate hobby.
Telkam - um, probably dies...
Aitim... oh goodness
Hm, I think one reason I’m having the experience of amenta tumblr being kind of (?)depressing (which is a thing I think I am noticing experiencing) is that it feels like Amenta is pretty much across-the-board worse than our verse in all kinds of ways (including both in areas where our verse is also bad, and areas where our verse is at least less bad) (and our verse is bad enough!), but not better in nearly any ways.
(Like, they have absent racism and religious persecution, but this isn’t something where they’ve done better, it’s just - absent).
The one big exception is gender, but (outside of me still being less clear on some details of that, which is a different thing and not really relevant to this) it looks like Amentans are basically all agender, so it’s not as much of a boost for me (though it’d probably be some?) and also that just doesn’t seem to come up so much.
(The other big exception is glb stuff but uh, apparently there’s a thing where they actually have heterosexism etc it just... didn’t make a particular jump socially, and then again the coming up thing.)
(Amusingly the gender thing just got literally said in basically those terms in imperial permissions (the glowfic thread, see my glowfic tag if you want to find it)).
(To be clear this isn’t like ‘this is bad’, it’s like, me thinking about my personal experience of things, I think brought on by the political parties thing).
ETA because I was thinking it and then forgot: also theatre! very theatre! Thank you @stagedelight ahhh
