Whitechurch Passage.
It is just a narrow path some 30 yards long, that links the back streets of Whitechapel to the fast-rising canyons at Aldgate. Lined by the graffitied-over backdoors of shops and cafes: it's the kind of place where overladen refuse bags lie slumped and empty carrier bags tumble. The air-conditioning vents and spouts release wisps of steam and dead air at short intervals.
Students and travellers come and go, some pulling roll-along cases, others grasping phones to their ears. Most of the time it is dim and empty here. Even the pigeons have no place to settle. However, it is home to a well-executed, though not necessarily commissioned work of art: a stucco relief against the old brickwork, under life-size. A withered, old woman is tidying a pile of money. She is dressed like a peasant - her head wrapped in a scarf and, I suppose, those are hobnail boots she is wearing. Her face is as deeply furrowed as her drapery, narrow shoulders hunched, while bony fingers clench the rake handle. The woman labours with no clear expression - perhaps this is simply what resignation looks like. She may be raking in the money, but it is clear she isn't destined to benefit from the effort. A tubby urban sprite has since been sprayed on the wall, as if to keep the old girl company. In solidarity, I fancy.
Much of the graffiti and fly-posters here address similar anti-capitalist themes. Not surprising, since this walkway physically connects one of the poorest (and left-leaning) boroughs of Britain, to one of the wealthiest banking districts in the world. T'was ever thus of course, but the architectural expression has never been as bald and blunt as it is today. Big money talks to the west of here - and , day-by-day, power captures acreage and sunlight from the old system of streets, its inhabitants and its pedestrians. The intimacy of this back alley, forlorn and adorned as it is, signifies resistance. Even the most inscrutable, meaningless daubing - every hastily scribbled moniker whispers to the passerby: I may have nothing to say, nothing. But I was here. I made a mark, see. I own this city too.
