Alan Garner’s THE OWL SERVICE is a strange, haunting story that left me frustrated the first time I read it (and the second and third as well — I have a lot of feelings about Gwyn, and I don’t fully understand the ending). But it’s still one of the #booksthatmademe because it’s so well written, with complicated teen characters, a strong sense of place, and deftly interwoven threads of Welsh mythology. . THE OWL SERVICE does a lot in a very small space. It touches on classism, nationalism, family dysfunction, thwarted ambition and doomed romance, and includes elements of psychological drama, mystery, and horror — all in a mere slip of a book, barely half the length of the average YA novel today. But it does its job with impressive economy, no words wasted and no needless characters or meandering subplots. And it’s a book that leaves you thinking, wondering what happens next. . The symbolism that drives the story is drawn from the Mabinogion, a classic collection of Welsh legends — which I’d read not long before I discovered this book, so I was pleased to recognize the references almost at once. The tragic tale of Blodeuwedd is a bit like the King Arthur - Guinevere - Lancelot love triangle if Guinevere were the Galatea to Arthur’s Pygmalion, which is part of why the developing triangle in THE OWL SERVICE frustrated me so much (FYI: I am always on Arthur’s side in that equation. Always). But the book does an excellent job of bringing the passions and conflicts of the legend into a plausible present-day scenario, and including its supernatural elements in subtle, clever ways. (Do I want those owl-flower dishes? Yes, I do. The Bodleian Library has one: see Image 2 attached.) . TELL ME: Have you ever read a book that frustrated you or even made you mad, but you ended up admiring/liking it anyway? . . . . #bookstagram #bookish #IReadYA #BookRecommendations #books #reading #alangarner #theowlservice #mabinogion #blodeuwedd #carnegiemedal #kidlit #childrensliterature #welshmythology https://www.instagram.com/p/B-5gFCSgJ1x/?igshid=1opm7xwp5n195
✨Review✨ . Treacle Walker by Alan Garner . How do I BEGIN to describe the experience of reading this book? It’s fun, but it is so confusing (specially because english is my second language) and I spent most of my time googling things. Other than the language barrier, this is a fun and dreamy exploration on time. With a fondness for what’s silly and ridiculous, Alam Garner gives us a piece of him playing with words and sintaxis. It gave me Alice in Wonderland meets Take On Me by A-ha. And it was as mystifying ad that sounds but not as entertaining as I would have thought from that description. . . . #alangarner #book #bookworm #literature #bibliophile #bookstagrammer #bookstagramerespaña #madrid #bookstagramespaña #bookish #booksbooksbooks #bookblog #booktok #libros #kindle #amazonkindle #digital #digitalbook #booksta #igreads #cozy #cozyreads #funny #treaclewalker (at Bookstagram) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp0v1wLLmzA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#fallforbooksmugglers Day 31: Scariest Read Alan Garner's The Owl Service terrified me as a child, so much so that it was only relatively recently that I tried re-reading it as an adult, and it proved to still be chilling, creepy and claustrophobic. It definitely didn't help that we watched the TV adaptation at school, as well as reading the book. I learned af a very early age that scaring myself for the purposes of entertainment [sic] didn't entertain me at all, so I avoid the horror genre, and most psychological thrillers too. #bookstagram #alangarner #theowlservice #scary https://www.instagram.com/p/BplazJblWZ8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ee5gjvhil0ch

‘Like when you’re watching a person who’s asleep, and they wake up,’ said Roger. ‘They don’t move, nothing happens, but you know they’re awake.’
I was never able to finish The Owl Service as a child but that line always stayed with me. Like Red Shift, this isn’t an easy read, but its magic stays with you.
‘Not haunted,’ said Gwyn after a while. ‘More like – still happening?’
There will probably be an increase in book posts in the coming weeks as I’m bed-bound. But then again Love Island isn’t going to watch itself.
