bc it's relevant to the fic i'm writing (or rather scrolling tumblr instead of writing) - are the papas prone to nightmares? and if so, how do they cope?
Nihil: Sleeps like a baby wakes up every two hours crying completely undisturbed. Has One (1) Prophetic Dream Per Year which he promptly ignores and chalks up to bad digestion or too much weed - they always come true and he never remembers. He once dreamt of twins and a solar eclipse. He dreamt of his saxophone and a tightness in his chest. He dreamt of three men silenced forever at a game of cards. He never remembers. He naps at the drop of a hat too. But his sleep is the dreamless untroubled sleep of a man who has lived a long time and is out of fucks to give
Primo: ...define "nightmares". Dreaming of horrors would probably intrigue or amuse him. He actively wishes for those kind of dreams - they make him feel closer to Hell. However, what hits him like a nightmare is dreams of unending surreal mundanity. He doesn't get them often, but dreams where he has to grocery shop and the store just keeps going on forever, or dreams where he's working a Normal Person Job - those will fuck him up for the whole day. He'll spend a day following a nightmare like that reminding himself of the life he has lived - his time with his family, his time as Papa, his service to Satan, the things that make his life His and not that of some random peon.
Secondo: Nightmares can't catch you when you don't sleep, or when you only sleep by passing out, and this is his tried and true technique. Also, life is a nightmare. What differs from day or night is your level of agency and a matter of degrees. At night he dreams of his days, and in his days he's trapped in a transitory state halfway between stardom and irrelevance, between hedonism and rulership - truly enjoying neither. He knows his time as Papa is limited, he knows his time on Earth is limited, and he feels the ticking of the clock like his heartbeat - that beat follows him into his dreams, thump thump, tick tock...unless he gets shitfaced enough. So he always gets shitfaced enough.
Terzo: Nightmares can't catch you when you don't sleep. He and his brother have this in common. Terzo is haunted. He closes his eyes sometimes in broad daylight to chase away the shadows of the night before dancing in front of him - not full on hallucination like Cardi has sometimes, more an uncanny thing of something he sees triggers a flashback to the dream. His nightmares herald doom. He dreams of unstoppable regimes, of unclimbable towers, of unslayable monsters, being pitted against them again and again and like Sisyphus the boulder falls again and again. He gets glimpses of past, present, and future like the grapes of Tantalus, fleeting and unreachable. He is not eager to meet his father in Hell because at night his torment has already begun. He avoids his nightmares by avoiding sleep, or sleeping in small doses - if he gets a nap and doesn't sink all the way into REM cycles, he misses the agony. Terzo has mastered the art of the microsleep.
Cardi: Can't tell where the nightmares end and real life begins. His nightmares are of the real world turned sinister - Psaltarian's smile or Sister's words hiding a genuine threat, Nihil telling him he will never be good enough, his twin crawling out of a hole to seize his heart from his chest and devour it whole, pacing the hallways of the mausoleum again and again and again on his tricycle only to turn a corner and be on the same path again, being buried alive by paperwork, his mother coming onto him as her younger self and then manipulating him (oh no wait that one happened). They happen waking as well as sleeping to the point that Cardi isn't entirely sure sometimes if he is asleep. Escapism is his crutch. There aren't movies in his nightmares. There aren't video games in his nightmares. In his nightmares he's never browsing reddit. So he does these things, little distractions, little bits of unreality to remind himself that he's real.
Perpetua: Dreams of before. Dreams of the life he led before he was told he was Papa, before his twin, before the Ministry. He isn't sure if sleeping or waking is the nightmare, sometimes. He throws himself wholeheartedly into every performance on stage as a way of chasing these feelings away because regardless of what he may love or hate about his new life, he does love performing with his whole heart and soul. For 2-3 hours every night he can Forget, he can live in the Ritual. When he isn't on tour, he tries to carve out as much time for himself as he can. Time when he doesn't have to be Papa V Perpetua. Times when he isn't his old self either. Times when he is just...himself.
