chapter 28 is set on the winter solstice, because even outside a strict historical context, the symbolism of it in japan actually carries a tone that really fit the emotional space of this chapter. I sort of drew on a mix of things, general customs, folklore and also looked at some japanese literature/poetry to get a feeling for it and its atmospheric sensibilities. 

basically, the solstice wasn’t really a festive moment. it was moreso a point of tension, as it was the longest night of the year, when the world feels like it is fully tipped into darkness.

it was traditionally treated as a time when bad luck and misfortune drew nearer. people would use sound, fire and scent to keep the heaviness away. apparently things like incense/bells/branches were used to symbolically clear winter air and invite warmth back in. 

I think what I love most about that is the emotional angle of it all. the solstice might technically be the darkest point of the year, but its also the exact moment the world begins to turn back towards light, even if you can’t see it yet. 

I think the idea of that suspended, singular moment, a hinge, is so important and worth giving weight to. the beauty of a pause before something shifts. the ache of distance before movement returns… a lot of japanese poetry loves to linger in those moments of stillness and longing. it even reminds me of spirited away, like the train scene. where nothing really seems to happen externally, but everything changes quietly on the inside. stillness as movement, as growth.

that’s really what I wanted the chapter to feel like. the cold. the ceremony. incense rising in the winter air. bells that should feel hopeful but instead ring hollow. a very quiet ‘longest night,’ not because anything dramatic happens, but because sukuna and mc are standing at the furthest edge of their orbit. pride, tension, and unsaid things all stretched tight between them.

and since I use sun-and-moon imagery throughout the story, the solstice naturally becomes that point of maximum separation. a cold, suspended moment where nothing resolves… but something subtle and dangerous in their dynamic starts to tilt, just slightly, back toward the possibility of warmth.
