Christopher was practically bouncing. Kinda what happens when a global lockdown comes into effect, 10 year old Chris had been deprived of meeting his unofficial younger cousin for too long, and now, Buck was paying the price for that.
"Uh, yea, Chris, they'll be here in a bit, and then you can meet Jee."
Chris screwed up his face with an exaggerated sigh.
"Buck it's been, like, like, an hour."
"You got here all of 15 minutes ago, but alright."
Eddie shot a bemused glace over to Buck, who was doing his very best to quell the requests of the very impatient boy. He could very easily stop this, but honestly, he was having a good time watching Christopher wear Buck down. So a few more minutes of torturing Buck wouldn't hurt.
"BucK-" Christopher began again, swiftly cut off by the doorbell.
"You hear that? They're here."
Buck rushed to the door, Chris as close to his heels as he could manage.
"Now remember, you have to be quiet."
Buck leaned down to Chris, pressing a finger to his lips in a shushing motion. Chris returned the gesture, Buck going practically cross-eyed as Chris' finger narrowly missed going up Buck's nose.
"Quiet," Chris nodded earnestly. "I've got it."
Buck opened the door, just a crack at first, then fully, revealing Maddie and Chimney, Chimney carrying a rather large grey bag, and Maddie cradling a pink bundle.
"Jeeeeeeeee!" Chris whisper-yelled, dancing around happily, but remembering to stay quiet.
It took all of Buck's willpower to not just coo over Jee the whole time, after all, this meeting had been set up for Chris, who had really wanted to meet Jee, and as it had been revealed to Buck at some point, he was determined to be the very best "cousin". But Chris seemed to have disappeared.
Buck found Christopher sitting patiently on the couch, having not said a word for the past 10 minutes.
"Hey Chris, what's up, why are you just sitting here?"
"I'm waiting my turn."
"What, what for buddy?"
"To hold Jee." Chris stated, very matter-of-factly, going back to sitting still.
It didn't take long for Christopher to be set, back resting against the back of the couch for stability, Eddie on one side and Maddie on the other, slowly transferring the bundle over to Chris, who cradled her carefully, arms held tight in the way he had been shown a few minutes prior. His face was set in concentration and awe, completely focused on her tiny features, her serene expression as she slept on.
"Hi Jee! I'm Christopher." He whispered, leaning as close as he dared. "And I'm going to be your friend! Okay?"
Over Chris's back, Maddie and Buck made eye contact, smiling as Chris rocked her slightly.

five dances in tk and carlosās life
ao3 | 2.3k | @911fluffweek day 3: getting together // dancing
i.
TK looks over when Carlos slides off the hood of the Camaro, his hand trailing after him until heās forced to let go. Carlos is smiling almost shyly, shifting from one foot to the other, and TK canāt help but smile back, propping himself up on his elbows.
āCarlos?ā he prompts, confusion growing as no explanation is forthcoming. āEverything okay?ā
āYeah, of course. I just, uhā¦ā He bites his lip, then takes a decisive step forward and holds out a hand, cocking a brow suggestively. āWanna dance?ā
TK laughs. āSeriously?ā he asks, but heās already sitting up and placing his hand in Carlosās, allowing him to pull him off the car and to his feet.
āWellāāCarlos shrugs, yanking TK close and smiling at the oof he makes when their chests collideāāitās how we began, isnāt it? I figured, if weāre starting again, then it feels only right, no?ā
TK stares, stuck dumb, unable to do anything but follow Carlosās lead as his arms slip around his waist, guiding them into a gentle sway. He rests his own hands on Carlosās chest, the realisation that he gets to do this nowāgets to touch Carlos and be with him like thisāhitting him all over again. To think he almost threw it all away⦠Well, none of that matters anymore. What matters is that theyāre here, dancing in a field with no music save for the shuffle of their feet in the grass and the occasional bird or cricket, like a pair of lovesick idiots in a romcom.
And heās never been happier.
He slides his hands up until his arms are resting loosely around Carlosās shoulders, fingers playing with the stray curls at the nape of his neck. He stares into those familiar brown eyes, so full of warmth and light, Carlos cast in the beautiful glow of the Northern Lights above them, and TK feels an intense feeling take root in his chest. Itās not loveānot yetābut it will be.
He canāt imagine not falling in love with Carlos Reyes.
ii.
The club lights strobe around them, bathing the room alternately in lurid colours and strange shadows. The place is packed, the doors practically straining on their hinges, but the only thing TK is aware of is Carlosās body moving against his own, their movements perfectly in sync with each other.
Itās been a while since they were last about to do this, to come out and just let loose for the night. In fact, TK thinks the last time might have been when they were out with Paul what seems like a lifetime ago; so much has changed since, and TK feels like a completely different person to who he was back then.
He and Carlos have officially been together for a few months now, but itās like the universe has been working to stop them from actually being able to enjoy it. Theyāve managed to squeeze in some dates here and there, but between the shooting, the solar storm, TKās medical leave, and weeks of opposing shifts, getting a moment to themselves has been difficult.
But now, finally, they have one. And TK is going to milk it for all itās worth.
He turns slightly in Carlosās grasp, his head tilting up to catch his lips in a searing kiss. Carlos grips TKās hips tighter, pulling them flush against his own as he deepens the kiss, and TK gasps, a sharp thrill shooting down his spine.
The night stretches out blissfully in front of them, the knowledge that this isnāt just a fling that will end with the cold light of dawn making it all the sweeter. Itās still a little surreal, even now, but it also feels so damn right.
TKās heart hammers in time with the music and he sinks into Carlosās hold, losing himself in his heat.
iii.
Itās not that TK never felt at home at the condo. The opposite in fact; Carlosās place had been home even before he could officially call it his, and he feels the loss of it keenly. The thing is, though, even after heād fully moved in, it had been a struggle to think of it as theirs.
It had been home, sure, but it had also been Carlosās place.
Carlos had found it a little funny, and it had taken several slip-ups on TKās part and just as many gentle corrections on his for TK to get used to our dining room, and our bedroom, and our house.
And thenāwell. Just as heād started to get used to it, it was all gone. Ashes. It hurt, deeply, but TK knew that it was his turn to be the one to lean on, to let Carlos be the one to set the pace. Carlos had lived there for years, after all, and what was TKās month compared to that?
Really, anywhere that Carlos is would be home, but thisāholding the keys to a house theyād picked out together, a house theyād signed the lease for together, a house theyād picked the furnishings for togetherāfeels like coming home.Ā
He hates that it was the condo burning down that got them to this stage, but TK canāt stop a grin from emerging on his face as he slips his key into the lock.
He finds Carlos in the kitchen, humming and shimmying to a song playing from the speakers. To his credit, TK really does try to bite back his laughter, but he canāt quite manage it, letting out a loud snort which has Carlos stopping in his tracks, flushing a deep red.
āI see the unpackingās going well,ā he says, walking over to the kitchen counter and leaning a hip against it.Ā
āIt was, actually,ā Carlos defends, still blushing. āI didnāt realise youād be back this soon.ā
TK shakes his head; as adorable as Carlosās embarrassment is, he needs to let him know heās not making fun. āYou can relax, babe. You know I always love seeing you move those hips.ā
āMmm, donāt I know it.ā Carlos leans in and kisses him, lingering a moment before pulling back, a wide smirk on his face. āHow about you help me finish unpacking here and weāll see about showing you more of that hip action later?ā
TK grumbles, but does as heās told, the two of them falling into a comfortable rhythm as they work to getting their house in order. Itās ended up being the perfect blend of their different styles, which probably shouldnāt work together, but somehow do, and TK loves it here. They both do, he knowsānothing will ever replace what they lost in the fire, but being able to build a home together is beyond special.
He keeps sneaking glances at Carlos as the afternoon goes onāsue him, his boyfriend is built like a Greek godāand TK smiles when he realises Carlos has started dancing again. He probably doesnāt even realise heās doing it, which makes the whole thing so much better.
TK watches for a while, then walks up to Carlos and taps him on the shoulder. āMind if I cut in?ā he asks, gesturing to the wooden spoons he was twirling around.
Thereās a brief moment of confusion, before Carlosās eyes light up with realisation. He barely wastes a second in tossing the spoons aside (though, itās more like a careful placement in the correct drawer) and grabs TK by the hand, sending him into a literal spin.
TK laughs, taking a moment to right himself after the sudden movement caused him to stumble inelegantly. Neither of them are in time with the music as they dance around the kitchen, carefully avoiding the boxes still scattered around, but itās not important.Ā
For the first time in his life, TK feels fully, completely at home. Itās not a feeling he wants to let go of.
iv.
āI think they were expecting something slower,ā TK murmurs, burying a laugh in Carlosās neck. Their guests are all wearing expressions with varying degrees of shock, and he canāt really blame themāheās pretty sure the last thing anyone expects to hear during a first dance at a wedding is a country song. āI still canāt believe you even remember it.ā
Carlos shrugs. āI still canāt believe you donāt. It is our song, after all.ā
TK rolls his eyes, remembering their first conversation on this topic months ago, back when they were still sorting out all the wedding minutiae.Ā
āāOurā song, babe?ā heād said, raising a skeptical eyebrow. āWhy, because we danced to it for five minutes before leaving to get off in the bathroom?ā
āExactly,ā Carlos had replied, his tone so serious that TK wasnāt sure whether he was joking or not. Heād rolled his eyes and lightly shoved at TKās shoulder. āNo, babe. Because it was the first time we danced together on the night that we met. Thatās special, right, even if it did only last five minutes?ā
TK hadnāt exactly been able to argue that one, and he has to admit now that it was a pretty good choice. If only to see the way Judd almost choked on his champagne in surprise when the song started.
Itās a little untraditional and, if heās being honest, TK had never thought that one day he would be getting married in Texas on his new husbandās family ranch, with their first dance being to a ācowboy songā, as heād once called it, much to Carlosās horror. But he and Carlos have never been ones for tradition, and TK wouldnāt have it any other way.
āItās perfect,ā he admits, his eyes never leaving Carlosās. He stops the dance, not caring that the song is still playing, and steps closer, pressing their bodies together. Everything else fades into the background as he leans up and kisses Carlos, barely moving when they break apart. āI love you, Husband.ā
Carlosās face lights up in a grin that could rival the sun in its brightness. āI love you too, Husband.ā
v.
Music is floating through the door when TK gets home, and itās enough to alleviate the weight heās been carrying all day. Itās not that it had been a bad shift per se (though, when your standards for a good day are ānobody diesā, your view tends to get a bit skewed) but it had been long and tiring, and heād missed his family desperately.
Sometimes, he still canāt believe this is really his life. But Ana, now three, has been living with them for a year already, and TK canāt imagine their home without her anymore. Sheād been a blessing, coming into their lives after years of fighting to get on adoption registers, right when they were beginning to despair of ever managing it.
They did, though, and now TK gets to come home to scenes like this.Ā
Scenes like Ana standing on Carlosās toes as he guides her slowly around the room in a basic dance. TK watches for a moment before getting his phone out and hitting record; heāll be damned if he misses the opportunity to get this on film.
Carlos, having heard him enter, rolls his eyes when he sees what TKās doing, but flashes him a quick smile before returning his focus to Ana. She hasnāt noticed TKās entrance, her face scrunched up in deep concentration as she grips onto Carlosās hands as tight as she possibly can.
When the music ends, Ana claps her hands and giggles. TK takes the moment to make his presence known, dropping to his knees and holding his arms out. She barrels into him, almost knocking him over, and presses her face into his chest, her tiny hands creating creases in his uniform shirt.
āHi, sweetheart,ā TK murmurs, dropping a kiss in her hair. He gently detaches her from him and manoeuvers them until sheās sitting in his lap. āLooks like you guys were having fun while I was at work.ā
She nods enthusiastically. āPapa was teaching me to dance! Abuela showed me photos when I was with her and Abuelo and I wanted to be just like her!ā
āAbuela got out the photo albums again, huh?ā
Ana nods again. āOf her⦠Herā¦ā She frowns and looks up at Carlos.
āHer china poblana dresses,ā Carlos says softly, smiling as Ana grins and points at him.Ā
TK laughs and draws his daughter into a hug, rocking them gently, his gaze going up to Carlos. āWell, from what I saw, you were dancing even better than Papa,ā he says, smirking as Carlos gasps in mock offence. He looks back down at Ana, tapping on the back of her hand. āYou know,ā he starts, smiling, āI think I might need some dancing lessons too. Think you can teach me?ā
Ana lights up and immediately gets to her feet, as if sheād been waiting for him to ask. She grabs TKās hand and pulls him up, leading him to where Carlos must have cleared a space for them earlier. The music begins to play again and TK lets his daughter take charge, playfully sticking his tongue out at Carlos when he laughs at TK getting firmly told off for putting his foot in the wrong place.
At some point, Carlos joins the dance, the three of them stepping and bouncing around the front room. Anaās laughter fills the house, shrieking with delight when Carlos sweeps her from the floor and wraps both her and TK in his arms. TK leans his head on his husbandās shoulder, a hand placed on their daughterās back, and breathes out slowly, all the exhaustion from earlier forgotten.Ā
Written for @911fluffweek : Day 2 -kids know best & staring at the stars.
Pairing: Hen Wilson/Karen Wilson, Evan āBuckā Buckley/Eddie Diaz
Rating: T
Word Count: 1,292
Summary:Ā Ā Christopher and Denny plan the ultimate outdoor 'adult' date for their parents...but Buck and Eddie are just friends, right?
Can also be read on A03. Ā
*****
āWe should have known they were up to something,ā Eddie said to Karen with a wry smile on his face as they watched Denny and Christopher running around outside to set up the yard for the āadultā date they had planned.Ā When Eddie thought about it, he remembered noticing that Christopher was going to his room to talk to his friends, rather than sitting in the living room or at the kitchen table like usual.Ā He had chalked it up to Christopher getting older and wanting some privacy; everyone knows that the pandemic didnāt allow for much alone time, and Christopher definitely missed hanging out with his friends.
Eddie looked out at Karenās backyard.Ā The two boys had already laid out a couple nice, soft blankets on the ground, and placed large pillows all around them.Ā Christopher had informed him this way would ensure that they had the proper cushioning, since the older they got, the harder time they had sitting on the ground.Ā He had let out a bit of a chuckle about that, recalling the many times that heās told Christopher that he canāt sit on his knees for a long period of time.Ā Ā
āI have to say Eddie, Iām a bit surprised at your comfort level right now,ā Karen said, interrupting Eddie from his observations.Ā She was giving him an odd look that Eddie found himself returning, not really sure what she was talking about.Ā āI donāt mean to stereotype, but most men I knowā¦ā Karen paused, trying to ensure that she wasnāt implying anything negative, but then found herself interrupted by the man she was going to ask about.
āHey, Eddie, I think we should maybe pop out and assist,ā Buck said, poking his head into the living room, his arms full of all the fixings for sāmores.Ā āChristopher just radioed me to let us know that they are ready to start the fire, and I donāt think we should be letting them do that on their own.āĀ He shot a quick smile at Karen, a silent apology for interrupting their conversation.Ā Ā
Eddie took a quick glance out in the yard and ran to the door, hollering at the boys to wait for an adult to supervise.Ā He then headed on out to help them with the last few steps, with Buck following closely behind to assist.Ā Ā
By that time Hen had also emerged from the kitchen, placing a large bowl of popcorn down on the coffee table and a couple of drinks for the boys to enjoy during their indoor movie time.Ā Coming over to where Karen was watching, she placed her arm around her wifeās waist.Ā āDo you think this will help these two realize their feelings for each other?ā Hen asked bluntly, not holding back on her words as they watched Buck placing his hand gently on Eddieās lower back as Eddie taught the boys how to safely start the fire.Ā Ā
āWho knows at this point,ā Karen said with a chuckle, grabbing Henās hand and pulling her outside.Ā It was time to relax and enjoy their āadultā date.Ā
XXXXX
With the exception of a few interruptions, one for changing the movie because Captain America is better than Iron Man, and for snack refills, the boys had mostly left the adults alone for the evening, allowing them to relax and take a break from the stresses of their jobs.Ā They all ate way too many sāmores, and maybe had a few too many beers, while they chatted and caught up with one another around the cozy fire pit.Ā Ā
Buck always thought Karen was awesome, but as she relayed her stories about her work with NASA, he revised his opinion to her being an awesome genius.Ā He couldnāt help but ask her a gazillion questions, pausing at times to glance at Eddie, concerned that he was taking over the conversation.Ā But then Eddie would send him that soft smile, that he only really saw Eddie give to him, and he would feel all warm inside, and comfortable to keep asking questions.
But it was getting late, and Hen and Karen had stretched back on their blanket, cuddling and watching the stars.Ā Buck smiled, he was happy to have the two of them in his life, and that they were comfortable enough to show their relationship to them.Ā Leaning back on the blanket he was sharing with Eddie, he let out a small chuckle.
āWhat?ā Eddie asked him, looking at him in confusion, not understanding the source of his laughter.Ā He had been laying down on one of the pillows previously, but now had himself propped up on his elbow, looking at Buck.
āI was just remembering a conversation that I had with Christopher awhile ago,ā Buck said with a grin.Ā āI forget how the topic came up, but I said that stargazing was something you did with someone special...and I think that may have inspired this evening plan.ā Buck added, motioning up to the sky, now filled with glittering stars.Ā Buck thought back to the rest of the evening, the boys had set it up like the ultimate date he wished it was.Ā He glanced back at Eddie, watching his reaction closely as he reached out to take Eddieās hand in his, deciding to take the plunge.Ā āAnd youāre special to me,ā he said simply, caressing the back of Eddieās hand with his thumb, waiting anxiously for Eddieās response.
At the least he had expected some sort of acknowledgement, maybe a brotherly hug at the most.Ā But all of a sudden his arms were full of Eddie, and Eddieās lips were against his and he felt like he was flying.Ā He could feel Eddieās hands in his hair, tugging his curls gently as the kiss continued, Eddie pressing his body flush against Buckās.Ā Eddie nipped at his bottom lip, and Buck let out a small gasp as Eddie continued to explore his mouth with his tongue, the two of them so caught up in each other that they didnāt register the flying projectile until it made contact.Ā Ā
āWhat?!ā Eddie exclaimed, pulling the offending pillow away from his head and glaring over at Hen, who had been the obvious thrower.Ā Buck blushed at the sight of Hen and Karen staring at them, trying to pull away from Eddie, but Eddie was still on top of him and was refusing to move a muscle.Ā Ā
āKeep it PG you two,ā Karen added, her attempt at looking stern failing miserably as her excitement for the two of them started to show in a widening smile.Ā āWeāll go check on the kids, let you two cool down a tad,ā Hen added with a laugh, pulling Karen towards the house.
Buck took a quick glance at his watch, noticing that it was after midnight.Ā āWe should...we should probably go in and help get Christopher to bed,ā Buck commented, still distracted by the weight of Eddie on top of him.Ā Ā
Eddie groaned and shifted off Buck, not wanting to move an inch.Ā But Buck was right, and so once he was able to get to his feet, he reached down and helped Buck to a standing position as well.Ā Then, before Buck could escape into the house, he pulled Buck in for another kiss, a much gentler one this time but still full of passion.Ā Ā
āYouāre special to me too,ā Eddie said in response to Buckās previous declaration, mentally thanking his son for giving them both the courage and the opportunity to finally admit their feelings.Ā As they walked back towards the house, their shoulders bumped as they always do, but this time, Eddie reached out and intertwined his fingers with Buck, sharing a soft smile as they entered the home together.
