Ultimate X-Men #19
On Reed, Doom, The Maker and all that makes 6160s Reed(s) so fascinating.
The question that started this entire rant post is this: If The Maker did all this to Reed Richards and he himself took over almost every facet of Doom's place in the universe, then what would he / has he done to Victor von Doom?
While I find it quite unlikely I would love it if we at least got a glimpse of what exactly became of Victor von Doom's in the Maker's poisoned Universe [6160] in these final issues.
Now on to what makes Doom and Mr Fantastic's dynamic so interesting:
One of the things I find most fascinating is that given the chance to reshape and rule an entire universe here we have (a) Reed taking Victor's place in the world. Even by literally making Latveria and what would be Doomstadt into his headquarters and moving/recreating The City there.
Reed and Doom are forever going to mirror each other either intentionally or coincidentally. I firmly believe that 1610s Reed took Victor's place as revenge / in reference to God Emperor Doom's life with the F4.
"Good Artists copy"
"Great Artists steal."
Furthermore 1610 Reed went on to not only ruining his 6160 counterpart's life but also stealing and destroying all that made Reed Reed. His family, his powers, his place in the world and recently revealed even taking Reed's curiosity/joy of discovery which is such a fundamental part of why and how Reed interacts with and views the entire universe.
He is an explorer first and foremost, studying and learning purely to know, experience and share the veauty of existence and this is what the Maker stole and thus quite literally doomed 6160 Reed.
616 Reed said he would erase the Maker if confronted with the choice thus 1610 had to do worse, The Maker -though much more sinister in his case- shares this need to surpass Reed with 616 Doom.
What interests me: was this the only reason? Is it merely a cruel punishment only he, The Maker, can truly understand and "appreciate" for its irony? Is it once more the Marvel Cosmos' inherent ties to storytelling that cannot accept and unbalanced scale?
Or is it that for every Reed Richards there must be a Victor von Doom to challenge/rival/balance him and vice versa?
This (new) Ultimate Universe, 6160, is in so many ways as direct a successor to 2015's Secret Wars and the way in which it has continued plot threads, storylines and most importantly themes has been nothing short of incredible.
Doom accused Reed of believed himself capable of creating a better universe than Victor and even went so far as to agree -albeit in a fit of rage that revealed his true thoughts- that Reed most likely could (and in fact went on to do so thanks to his greatest strength, his family).
Now with The Maker, this terrifying mirror image that directly confronts Reed with what else he could've become, a universe wasn't created but stolen, tarnished and almost utterly ruined.
Reed Richards and Victor von Doom are their long, intricate and so very personal dynamic are forever at the heart of Marvel and the execution of this latest exploration is brilliant and captivating.
