Quentin Beck studied Peter before grooming him. Beck knew he lost Tony, a mentor, so he stepped in as one. He supported Peter, said he did well with the water monster, comforted him when Fury snapped at him, then as a funny little joke he “sacrificed himself to save everyone”. If you hear Peter in that scene, he says “Mr. Beck?” the same way he said “Mr. Stark?” when Tony died. Then he “spends time with him” by having a drink and telling him he did well on the mission. He studied the kid and made sure to stab every healing wound.
