Legal Aid:

Free for NLSC qualified clients

Civil Legal Assistance Program helps male and female clients represent themselves in uncontested civil legal matters

Assists individuals with uncontested, civil divorces.

Help clients file in court for child support payments to be suspended while incarcerated. This prevents the accumulation of tens of thousands of dollars in debt that could lead to arrest for non-support.

Provide name change sample paperwork so that clients can do it on their own easier

Notarize temporary guardianship papers allowing children access to medical care, health care, and schools.

Offer a general information sheet on paternity with instructions for establishing paternity.

Offer assistance with establishing or enforcing visitation.

Note: Although supervised by an attorney, Alternative Directions, Inc. has no attorneys on staff. Staff members cannot offer any legal advice or representation. They assist clients in representing themselves in simple, uncontested, civil cases.

Positive Directions

Available to: Incarcerated or recently incarcerated men and women between the ages of 18-26

Send people there who just got out of jail or prison

Reentry program dedicated to stopping the cycle of recidivism. The program includes case management during incarceration and continuous management upon release.

Children of Incarcerated Parents (CHIP) Mentoring Program

Available to: Children with a parent who is/was incarcerated, age 6 through 17, who are interested in being in a mentoring relationship. A parent/guardian must give consent for child to participate in program

CHIP seeks to match children whose parents are incarcerated with mentors from the surrounding community. Mentors serve as a responsible adult and friend to the mentees.

Reentry and Reintegration Services:

Free 1 year long re-entry program serving up to 250 individuals per year. (First 2 weeks are job readiness training, the rest of the year is helping find employment.)

Client should call for assessment, then he will be placed in a class.

Counseling and Case Management:

Case Managers help participants obtain support services where necessary, including mental health and/or substance abuse counseling, bus passes, identification, GED attainment, specific job skills training, work-appropriate clothing, health insurance application, assistance with housing, and other key assistance

Walk-ins available 

Education and Training:  

Hard- and soft-skills training, workshops, and certification programs to equip clients with the tools they need to succeed.

Two-week Employment Readiness Training session to prepare for employment through job development skills, skills and needs assessments, education evaluations, and interpersonal skill development.

Clients learn how to write a resume, how to search for jobs online, and set up an email address.

Clients are expected to be on time and follow a dress code.
