Alright, Imma just say it. It's very... Icky when fanfics shorten Akutagawa into ""aku"". Mostly because Akutagawa is a SURNAME and like... It's like calling a person who people call Mister Smith, "Smi" because it's cute.

I advocate for calling him "Ryuu" as a petname. Because it's shortening his actual name Ryuunosuke.

Same. Also, in Japanese "Aku" has a specific meaning - "evil", 悪. (Like yes, sure, there are verbs with that reading and different meanings, but the most common is still this. Also, the first kanji 芥 in Akutagawa's name is not read as "aku", it's read as "akuta".)

So for someone to shorten "Akutagawa" to "Aku" would be a very deliberate decision that verges on being insulting and confrontational. Perhaps could be spun as a joke, but not in any relationship.

My impression of how the Japanese treat petnames and nicknames is - they don't shorten the names. They'd use suffixes like -chan and -kun, sometimes made more cute even (-kyun, etc) for the surnames and given names. Sometimes a given name is shortened (Ryuu for Ryuunosuke, Yuu for Yuuichirou, etc), sometimes it's a different nickname altogether - i've seen Japanese fans and seiyuu call Akutagawa "Yatsugare-kun", joking about his very particular choice of a personal pronoun. Or, in a different manga, "Momoe-kantoku" (coach Momoe) becomes a nickname "Momokan".

So yeah. A Japanese person wouldn't call Akutagawa "Aku" just because. Fitzgerald might though XD
