Es interesante, como Esteban provoca muchas de las desgracias futuras en su vida y la de otros, por estar furioso con Rosa. El mayor pecado que ella comete, en sus ojos, es morir antes de que pueda poseerla.

No puede perdonarle que muera virgen, así que se convierte en un violador. Está furioso porque no fue su esposa, así que la reemplaza con Clara (al menos al inicio). Rosa es todo aquello que no puede tener por su condición economía, así que desparrama fortuna con su casa en la ciudad.

Para Esteban, las mujeres no son personas, son simplemente ideales (la belleza de Rosa/la eterna felicidad de Clara/el sacrificio de Férula/la ambición de Tránsito) y cuerpos. No es capaz de verlas como individuos.
