You know what a bunch of RPG games are missing today?

A Bishop from Neverwinterwinter Nights 2 level of selfish asshole that CLEARLY are so and don't try to portray themselves in any other way as companion.

The very first time I played this, when I was what, 12 or 13? I was smitten by this evil-aligned asshole that warned he was an asshole and cared mainly about himself.

The writing was on the fucking wall in neon letters.

And still I was ABSOLUTELY SURPRISED AT HIS BETRAYAL. The "sometimes a character will still be a selfish asshole no matter what you do" stuck with me, you know?

I know he was supposed to be a RO and a lot of his dialogue reflects this - asking PC to run with him, being salty if PC has higher influence with Casavir, the paladin, and being even more intense in the betrayal because of it... But he still being a selfish asshole and betraying the PC in the final battle gives his character strength.

That's it. We need selfish asshole characters that warn they are assholes and will keep acting as selfish assholes no matter what you do.

It's good to have control and see how you can influence people in RPGs and such? YES. But sometimes people are really that entrenched into who they are and nothing can change it.

Having played all Mass Effect and Dragon Age games to date and both Pillars of Eternity, and some more RPG games (I haven't played any of the Bauldur's Gate yet for lack of time) with companions and such, there is a very clear lack of characters that are unapologetic selfish assholes that may go through some change but not in this. Everyone is, in some way, likeable in a good way and not that selfish, not that asshole, even while still being flawed. Are they bad characters? Absolutely not. But they rarely go against the MC and defy their views in meaningful ways, specially if MC is good aligned.

Selfish asshole characters that are well written can be enjoyable. As I said, I was smitten by Bishop, and others were, there's a mod to make his Romance possible AND there's a Skyrim mod that adds him as a romanceable companion. It can be well done, if the ones creating the games take the risk. And like... There's a reason The Ghoul, a character that can come as selfish asshole, is one of the favorite characters from the Fallout TV series.

Besides, if one character is the selfish asshole but the betrayal still comes from another? All the more sweet drama and angst.
