Wayy to long gf rant but the first and last paragraphs are what really matter imo
I am SUCH a diehard Mabel defender and I strongly believe 99% of her haters and people who insist she’s so selfish are just misogynists bc yeah let’s ignore (for example) Ford’s whole character and the 12 year old ONLY GIRL in the main cast (excluding Wendy if you wanna count her) is the most selfish one? Like no she’s not the “evil twin” you’re just blinded by your hatred for her to even begin to understand her character
Yes, she has made dipper sacrifice things in some episodes…but majority of the time he’s sacrificing his time with wendy…WHO HE WAS NEVER GOING TO BE WITH ANYWAY!!!!! If anything she was doing him a big fat favor pulling him away from her for a lil bit so she can get her pig (who in all honesty was gonna get eaten if anybody but Mabel got it) or idk when they SAVED SOMEONES LIFE? People act like the only reason dipper got fired from the lifeguard job was bc he helped Mabel with one of her dumb crushes…like mermando would’ve probably died in that pool if they didn’t help him eventually and it’s not like the job meant everything to him anyway? Why is it ok for dipper’s unrealistic crush to get in the way of things but Mabel’s crushes absolutely not she’s a horrible person!!! And Wendy literally got fired with dipper for stealing snacks so it’s not like it mattered in the end?? They saved a life and he still didn’t lose out on his time with Wendy
And in the sock-opera episode…yes Mabel was selfish, but making a deal with a dream demon who you KNOW IS BAD NEWS FROM DREAMSCAPERS is totally 100% ok and we don’t need to talk about it so let’s only talk about mabel? Like they are both 12 years old obviously they don’t know better istg. And in the end, mabel literally defeats bill and gets dipper’s body back for him, ruining her own show and scaring her crush away. But ofc people would rather forget every single part where she makes up for her actions and/or apologizes and grows.
And back to her crushes, I have a firm belief that she is so “boy-crazy” bc of her parent’s relationship failing. It is heavily implied by the book of bill that dipper and Mabel’s parents are divorcing as dipper has reoccurring nightmares of a fight he overheard and they were in a rush to get them out of that house for the summer. As a daughter of divorce, I can say it impacts your view on relationships and harms your perception of your self worth in relation to love. Her summer romances failing got to her SO BAD she was willing to ERASE HER MEMORY OF THEM. That’s not normal “boy-crazy” behavior, there’s something deeper in her character that people don’t acknowledge. Her summer romances failing seem to be a reflection of how her futures going to turn out since the one relationship that matters most to her (her own parents) is failing itself.
Also the point where she remade her brother in her bubble. There’s been so many different perspectives on this and I want to propose mine. It is said in the show that dipper is too dipper meaning that he realistically would bring up reality if mabel had made him exact in the bubble. In order to not break that rule and still have her brother, which is all she really wants (and this is especially proven in the end when she does choose her real brother and gets out of the bubble), dippy fresh was the closest thing she could have to dipper. Yes it’s a sad thought but there’s no canon reason as to why she made dippy fresh instead of dipper so it’s not a valid reason to HATE her?
In conclusion she is a 12 year old girl experience so much change, the fear of growing up, the fear of her brother leaving her, a divorce/watching her parent’s marriage fail, and cherry on top she’s literally experiencing the supernatural right in front of her eyes. Yes she’s going to make rash and sometimes selfish decisions. But it is hypocritical and comes off as misogynistic and weird when you solo her out when again someone like Ford is never criticized to the extent he should in comparison to mabel. Like ford is a full grown adult who can never admit he is wrong and it costs people their safety. If he could’ve been an adult (same goes for Stan) and worked it out with his brother after he got out of the portal, weirdmageddon could’ve either been prevented, or stopped much sooner. But he’s a silver fox and a traumatized man so let’s all collectively hate on the scared little girl bc she stopped dipper from getting the girlfriend he was never gonna have anyway. IM PISSEDDD
And I feel like the worst things she’s done is get dipper and Wendy stuck with the shapeshifter and giving bill the rift which both she helped fix and with giving bill the rift she was tricked just like dipper was in sock-opera? She was in a vulnerable and emotional state, bill (in the form of someone she knew) gave her a glimmer of hope, she trusted him, and it was the wrong decision. Same thing with dipper, he was in a vulnerable and emotional state trying to figure out the computer password, bill gives him hope and a deal too good to be true, it was too good and bill smashes the laptop and takes his body so he made the wrong choice. But in the end, both twins helped each other fix their mistakes and it worked out. By hating on mabel you miss such a big point in the show that dipper loves her no matter what and mabel loves dipper no matter what and they’ll always pick up each others messes together.
