Love On Tour 2023: Melbourne, Night 1. (24 February 2023)

Many people have told Harry and Louis that coming out would ruin their careers. Many people believe it. Fandom believes it—Harry and Louis themselves seem to believe it.

It’s a concern based on evidence and precedent, that’s true. But—this evidence is from a social climate of several decades ago. When One Direction was formed—when Harry and Louis’ public personas were formed—gay marriage was not yet legalised in the UK or the US. No celebrities had come out so publicly and then gone on to have even greater success.

So, where the world has changed around Harry and Louis, they seem stuck in 2010 thinking. Straight-at-all-costs Louis; serial womanizer Harry; coming out as career suicide for both. Not much has changed for them.

Yet, the world has changed in that time. The LGBT population doubled, then doubled again. Acceptance rates have skyrocketed. In media, some of the top Netflix shows have been based on queer characters. In music, 30% of the Top 10 artists last year were publicly queer. It’s a different world.

So, given it’s now a totally different landscape, we want to argue something. We want to argue that Harry and Louis could come out in 2023. We want to argue that, given the cultural context, data, and precedents, they would enjoy similar or even greater—probably much greater—levels of career success. We want to argue that they will be happier and more fulfilled while being more successful.

We heavily base our conclusions on research, facts, provable observations, and case studies. There is at least just as much evidence showing that they would be successful after coming out as there is showing their careers would fail—if not more.

So—shall we entertain the idea for just a moment?

This post has been written by @louiscinema and I in order to bring a little variety to the current fandom discussion, where it seems like it’s unacceptable to suggest that Harry and Louis could be out. The majority of the discourse focuses on all the ways coming out would ruin their lives and end their careers—no one seems to mention the potential upside; that it could demonstrably improve their careers and lives, and that it has, for many people like them. In all honesty, it feels like we lose every time the fandom perpetuates the idea that their queerness is a disadvantage for them and shouldn’t be celebrated publicly. We want to provide a different perspective.
