Was listening to Burial from the film Mother Mary and why are my first thoughts hearing these lines now about driftsey...
To me the first part fits the moment at the lavender field especially with AJ's goal of getting Drift to leave the academy forever. The lyrics can also relate in a literal sense because AJ has actually buried Drift before, even pushing Drift away by revealing that it was her magic which caused her burial.
The second part I related mainly to AJ with her connections to death and lack of attachments. She wasn't supposed to let herself get attached to anyone at the academy, yet she became close with Drift. Her past relationship with Ghostie can also take a part since their breakup didn't go well and it seems that was the last time AJ loved someone.
