I think what's fucking me up the most about the Driftsey angst is thinking about what must be going through their heads.
You cannot tell me that AJ isn't fucking destroyed by what she has done. She's going to sit awake at night, wishing she had died in the trials if it meant that she would have never put Drift through that. That she said what she did to scare Drift away and try to keep her safe even though she knows she will likely never get back one of the few people that actually cared about her. Her self harming is only going to get worse, and nothing is going to make her forgive herself for what she's done. That she's done the exact same thing that others have to her that she hasn't forgiven, so why would Drift even CONSIDER it?
And Drift thinks she's lost her home. For the second time. But this time, it's so much worse, because it's not just the academy. It's not just a place she's staying. It's AJ. It's the first person who has made her feel seen beyond her status and what was expected of her. It's the memories and safety she felt with AJ that will never be the same again even if they manage to go back to normal one day. And that she doesn't know what she can trust anymore. But despite that, despite everything AJ has done, everything they've gone through, some part of her still can't stop trusting AJ. So instead, she has to isolate, even if they end up letting her back into the academy. She has to shove that all down, just like her past life, because if she lets herself trust again, who knows what will happen?
It's what could have been. If AJ had taken Megii's advice and gotten herself to sit down with Drift and tell her about her magic, maybe, just maybe, Drift would've told her about her past. They could've worked it out. They could've trusted each other even more. They could've protected each other instead of kicking each other while they were down. That's why fights with someone you love so much always hurts way worse. Someone you care about knows where it hurts the most, they know what to go after, they know how to scare you away.
It's their love for eachother that's destroying them.
