Colours, mostly, at a time when he had a body of his own. His skin was golden and his eyes were blue, and other than the faint red highlights in his hair, he looked like Jimmy Novak. He thinks that has to do with it, ultimately: which family has the correct bloodline. Castiel’s true vessel was always going to look like he did immediately after Lucifer’s Fall.

He remembers his feet in cool grass, his hands reaching upwards toward the rest of Creation… His body swathed in fine fabrics. Sweet breezes tangled in Castiel’s hair and sifted through his wings; air that smelled of herbs, of spices.

This was the Age where Angels danced.

Cas doesn’t sing anymore, but he did. His voice was one of many of the glorious instruments that gave thanks and praise to the Father. That composed songs to honour the victory of Heaven over the Fallen Morningstar. Fledglings used to play on the grass and act out the scene of Michael’s triumph over Evil. They used to laugh and play in the fields of The Lord.

But with the sin of humanity, Angels become true warriors, and their soft shapes were not suited to violence.

And so, did God take the flesh away and craft bodies of pure, unbridled Grace. And, once done, did he begin to form The Plan. The End of Days. The Apocalypse.

“…What’re you thinking’ about?”

Castiel smiles, blue eyes refocusing on Dean’s green. Curiously, Michael never looked like Dean… he’d always resembled John Winchester. “I’m happy to be here,” he confesses quietly, finger tracing over Dean’s bare bicep. The latter re-settles in bed, throwing a leg over Cas’s own and cuddling him more thoroughly. When he speaks, it’s with his lips against the angels bare chest.
