It kills me KILLS ME that sidestep forcing themselves to endure and go through the pain of being free from the farm alone quite possibly saved their life And the rangers too but esp Ortega. And no one knows this. Ortega's hurt and sad and mad that sidestep didn't come to them after escaping (even when they don't know all the details) but they don't know the farm was watching them SPECIFICALLY to check if sidestep would come crawling back to them. And sidestep maybe had a suspicion that the farm would look for them there and it's possible that factored into their decision to not go back to Ortega beyond feeling betrayed/not feeling like they could go back to that life/etc but they don't know they were fucking RIGHT
