The outro represents disassociation upon this realization. (which we see emma do when she gets assaulted and how she seems to lose that spark afterwards)

2. joy - waco, texas ໒꒱

i think in a way, this can also be interpreted as optimistic thinking in healthcare. joy at first wanted to believe that if she can be just good enough, then it’ll help make a difference in the field. but again, it’s just optimistic thinking and not something that’s realistic, and joy realizes that and wants to avoid being washed away by that crushing wave, hence why she’s so detached and cold. (i pray this makes sense LMAO)

3. ogilvie - hard times ໒꒱

in al hashimi’s case, this is both within her (her seizures) and without (Robby yelling at her & finding reasons to bash on her and blame her for “not caring” and being reckless)

2. collins - dust bowl ໒꒱

this line specifically, the being so in love that you don’t even question the truth behind the admission, is what i imagine it was like in heather and robby’s early relationship. she was likely a bit naive and wanted so badly to believe the admission was true until the relationship didn’t end up working out. yet, she still has that little bit of faith in him after everything.

3. ellis - american teenager ໒꒱

it’s a bit more broad, but i think this represents perfectly what it’s like to work in healthcare. med students, interns, etc. they’re all bright and young until they enter the field where it’s all horrible and scarring, and sure, there’s that reassurance that “it’s not always this horrible”, but is it really true? ellis likely went through the exact same thing, and we can see at the end of pittfest how exhausted she is, but like everyone else, she’ll keep going and come back again tomorrow.

4. garcia - lilies ໒꒱

i think this song represents garcia and santos’ situationship perfectly. garcia wants to be able to love and open up to santos, but knows her avoidant tendencies will just result in her pushing her away and hurting her in the process (and does as seen in season 2) even though deep down, she doesn’t want to lose her.

5. perlah - radio towers ໒꒱

i imagine it’s the same as mckay, honestly. this song represents healthcare worker burnout, with the haunting, empty feeling of the radio tower beeps that fill the silence completely (which can double as a heart monitor). the emptiness besides it all presents a sense of uncertainty after everything that’s happened. and if it is interpreted as a heart monitor, it represents an agonizingly still hospital room with a heart that’s failing. perlah knows firsthand how difficult it is, and like dana and many others, she’s likely getting tired of seeing the worst of people every single day. (think of the roof fireworks scene where she’s hugging dana with tears in her eyes)

6. princess - american teenager ໒꒱

langdon knows deep down that he could never truly blame santos for what she did because she’s just like him. yet his guilt over what he’s done and the trust he broke between he and robby especially makes him feel envious of how she was able to stay but he couldn’t. but still, he feels he cannot blame her entirely.

2. robby - nettles ໒꒱

representative of how robby partially wishes he could be like abbot—being brave enough to be able to get help, “move past” the horrible things in his life and not let them hold him back, etc. instead, robby deals with what he’s been through in ways that are reckless (his “sabbatical”) and is indirectly begging for help by dropping hints to people that he isn’t okay and that he can’t deal with it (as seen in s2).

said “picture on the wall” would be adamson, and referring to how people would praise him for being so strong and a great doctor when he was immediately forced to replace adamson in his role upon his death.

3. abbot - nettles ໒꒱

the piece of shrapnel is really multiple pieces, and meant to represent everything abbot’s been through. his wife’s death, losing his leg, etc. he tries to move past it all and not let himself linger on the bad as he keeps on living, but as the lyrics said, it “slowed that part” of him. he is no different from robby, he just was the only one between the two to actually reach out for help when he needed it. also, the “race to grow up” being the journey through med school and eventually being thrown into the medical field, and the growing up being forced to see all the ways the world can be cruel.

4. dana - a knock at the door ໒꒱

said friend being robby and how the more he struggled, the more destructive it became for himself and his peers around him without him realizing how it looks on the outside. dana knows he’s been struggling, but doesn’t know what she can do about it when he’s constantly rejecting help, making herself feel completely helpless.

5. mckay - radio towers ໒꒱

Like her time in the ER where it is overwhelming and loud (especially in s2), it eventually comes to an end & she realizes that she deserves more and better than this.

2. santos - janie ໒꒱

these lyrics specifically show how santos, despite her not wanting to admit it aloud, wants to be able to rely on someone who will care and wants to trust them. “my girl” refers to her best friend growing up and how she was that person for her before she passed.

3. mel - waco, texas ໒꒱

“i swore i’d be good to you” is her promising to always take care of becca and be there for her, but the more independent becca becomes and starts to build her own life separate from and without mel, she realizes that in reality, she needs her sister more than her sister needs her, hence the “walking away” line.

4. javadi - family tree (intro) ໒꒱

pretty self explanatory. javadi’s family tree with both of her parents being doctors and raising her with high expectations (especially her mother) and how she feels she cannot make a single mistake without feeling shame and guilt for doing so, knowing her mother would say “i raised you better than this” and feeling as if she failed completely as a doctor and daughter.
