Well in 1999 there was a perfectly reasonable and good proposal to replace the Governor-General and Queen with a ceremonial President appointed by a 2/3rds majority of Parliament to ensure it was an apolitical and bipartisan appointment instead of just having the PM be the sole person to appoint the Governor-General, thus indirectly giving the public a greater input on the decision of the head of state while making sure the position did not become one for a politician...

And then the monarchists chanted "don't know? Vote no!" AND FUCKING LIED THROUGH THEIR TEETH about what a republic would mean until people got scared into voting no.

And that set us back decades.

Then Labor wanted to put forward a perfectly reasonable and good proposal for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament that would've given Indigenous people more input in the decision making process on matters that affected them by forming an advisory body....

And then the racists chanted "don't know? Vote no!" AND FUCKING LIED THROUGH THEIR TEETH about what the Voice would mean until people got scared into voting no.

And then Labor got scared of approaching any other potential referendums and so has quietly put off the idea of a republic to be revisited sometime in the indeterminate future.

Change doesn't happen while conservatives have a platform to spew hatred, fear, and misinformation. We failed to become a republic because of Howard and we'll continue to fail as a nation while Dutton has any say or influence.
