One of my favorite things about having a degree in biochemistry is going undercover at a store like Sephora. I can read the composition of the cosmetics and actually understand them. Thereâs no words to describe how great it feels. Itâs like being in on an inside joke or secret
The main thing I observe is that a lot of employees recommend makeup that is chemically incompatible. For example, if you ask them to recommend you a foundation and concealer, a lot of times theyâll pick two products that are chemically immiscible, so theyâll NEVER blend together successfully.
Generally foundation/concealer is either water or silicone based. There are upsides to each based on your needs. However, water and silicone are immiscible, and so if your foundation is water based but your concealer is silicone based, you will never get a good blend between these products. Youâll have to go back to switch to something that works.
If you want to test for this in-store, mix the two on the back of your hand. If they form a uniform mixture, theyâre miscible. If they separate, theyâre chemically incompatible, and should not be used together. You can do this for any number of skin products. Primers, moisturizers, foundations, concealers, contour sticks, etc etc. Anything that comes in liquid or paste form.
You donât need to understand all the chemicals on the label to run this experiment!
As someone in pharmaceutical sciences I also experience similar things, so a hint from me: collagen is useless. In a cream it will not penetrate the skin, so doesn't do anything. As a food supplement, lemme tell you a secret: collagen is a protein. And when you eat protein, your stomach thinks its food and chops it up, so it can be used to make your own protein. Collagen is just expensive protein powder, and doesn't do anything meat or a veggie substitute does.

a new reality tv show called So you think you can write Doctor Who
twelve episodes, twelve contestants - a mix of annoying middle aged sci fi authors, fan fic authors and random people off the street
a variety of against the clock writing tasks, big finish scripts, ability to interact with actors without shouting at them and challenges where you have no budget or doctor for an episode
judged by solely by christopher eccleston
this is how you find the new doctor who showrunner
The older i get the more i understand why some people become obsessed with privacy, not because theyâre hiding something, but because being constantly perceived starts to feel spiritually exhausting.
Did you know that soda machines at restaurants and movie theaters spy on you? That most common new cars now record your sexual preferences and send it to the manufacturer (and also data about anyone who also gets in your car, walks by your car, and maybe happens to be within visual range of your car)? That grocery stores are trying to force customers to download an app to scan barcodes on shelves instead of putting up prices, so the app can scan the phone, decide how much that customer should be squeezed for, and adjust the price? That more and more innocent people are being sent to jail for crimes committed hundreds of miles away because an AI facial recognition algorithm spit their faces out and the cops didn't bother to do the most basic of checks?
I am not uptight about privacy because I'm hiding something. I'm uptight about it because the people who dismiss my right to privacy are dangerous to you and me and our families, personally, all the time.
And often, they are assholes, too.

very telling that even if youâre not allowed to view content related to self harm/suicide/eating disorders due to not giving up your ID on the uk internet you will still be shown relentless ads for weight loss drugs and fad diets showing unrealistic/AI generated bodies and unhealthy methods and time frames for weight loss that can only be achieved by starvation. oh and also so so many gambling ads. relentless ads for gacha and gambling services. almost like itâs not actually about protecting kids at all or something
This is why Pride is not just a party. It's a joyful celebration, but it's also a pointed and colourful two-finger salute to a world that stood back whilst so many of us died. And we'll never go quietly, never again.

Happy Pride everyone, today is the tenth anniversary of the nationwide right to gay Marriage in the United States and the 22nd anniversary of nationwide legalization of Gay Sex. In 2 days is the 56th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.
We have won nothing without fighting and we have everything to lose, there is no gay liberation without trans liberation, none of us are free till all of us are free, we have won so much and come so far but the road ahead is still long, we must continue to fight for both our liberation and the liberation of all people
The gay liberation movement is young, everything we have fought for and won happened over the course of less than a human lifetime, and there are forces at play that wish to claw back at these hard fought for rights, we must be prepared to defend what we have fought for and we must continue to fight for improvement
We have to celebrate how far things have come, because we never would have made it this far without joy and hope, and while we can and must fight, we also must remain hopeful
Nationwide right to gay marriage in the United States: Obergefell v. Hodges, June 26, 2015
Nationwide legalization of Gay Sex: Lawrence v. Texas, June 26, 2003

we have to thank our brave soldiers in fandom who write gen fics. we have to thank our brave soldiers in fandom who write character studies and stories with no focus on romance or sex. we have to get on our knees and thank the brave soldiers in fandom who write about minor characters and friendship and family with no focus on romance or sex. i know itâs hard to care about characters in a world that seems to only revolve around ships but i see you. and i love you

âI think that every choice is political. When you decide that a woman can be a character of her own and not have to fall in love with the f***ing guy, thatâs a political choice. When you choose that they can speak in their own language and be subtitled, thatâs a political choice. I think itâs very important for us to understand that we are all â the whole world â in the same robot. Itâs this f***ing planet. No matter who you are, what you like to do, whatever your race or whatever your religion, weâre all human. And I think itâs really great to make a movie that celebrates that diversity.â
â
Q: I really appreciate the fact that you have non-American actors speaking their native languages, instead of making it seem like everyone in the world speaks English like it usually is in most Hollywood movies. Why is Hollywood so allergic to subtitles? â Interview in Today Online with Guillermo del Toro, 11/07/2013

Do yâall know how striking this scene in an action movie was to me? Main lead, who is young and gorgeous and the whitest of whites, oversteps his bounds. He touches a commanding officer. In any other action movie the dressing down would not be this severe (Elbaâs adlibbing on this is terrifyingâŠforget kaijus, Raleigh looks more scared by him than anything that crawls out of the breach and half the audience squirmed in chastened sympathy because WOW). And the thing is, Raleigh is right. His initial argument that Stacker is holding back Mako is for all intents and purposes, the correct assessment. Heâs RIGHT. But he isnât in a position to tell that to a commanding officer, especially the way he does. So Stacker puts him back in his place. Raleigh KNOWS he went out of line the minute he touched Stacker and rather than argue or shout âyou know Iâm rightâ or storm off or IGNORE a commanding officer like any other action movie would have the hero do, Raleigh backs down. Stacker doesnât even let him get away with just the nod and choked back frustration, he makes him VERBALLY back down as well. There is no question who is in charge here. Raleigh is obviously angry and frustrated and still riding the testosterone high of kicking Chuckâs face, but he FREAKINâ BACKS DOWN LIKE ANYONE WITH SENSE IN THE MILITARY WOULD. Itâs always baffled me that main rodeo cowboy hero of every movie can just walk all over rank and command and not pay for it because heâs âspecialâ. Raleigh only sort of does this once (and remember, his argument is valid) and heâs immediately reminded thatâs not what heâs there for. And he KNOWS because he never complains about it, never goes off and stews about how unfair Stacker is, never holds it against Stacker later. He knows he crossed a line and he belly crawls back across it because itâs all about respect and he overstepped. This is something 9 out of 10 action movies wouldnât address.
This is carried through in really fucking interesting ways throughout the movie, actually. Â You remember the scene where we get introduced to Stacker? Â The Becket boys are joking with Tendo about his disaster of a love life, and itâs cute and fun and casual and dude shenanigans â and then it gets announced that the Marshal is on deck. Â The camera happens to be on Tendo, and you see him â you see on-fucking-screen how his shoulders straighten and he sits up and his tone of voice changes and goes professional. Â And you see it again, too, in the post-double event scene where people are in a joyous, packed crowd around Mako and Raleigh â and then Stacks shows up at the door, and a path fucking parts for him like he is smoking-hot Moses in a double-breasted suit. Â Â
Thatâs presence, folks.  Thatâs charisma, and even more than that, itâs people respecting a natural fucking leader who has earned respect. Â
Itâs been pointed out that people disobey Stacker in PacRim all the fucking time. Â Youâll note that itâs not something undertaken for shits and giggles, though. Â Instead, itâs because theyâve made an evaluation in the field and disagree because they think itâll cost lives â each time, itâs presented in a sympathetic light, and each time, the movie shows that their disobedience Does Not Get What The Disobedient Ones Want. Remember that Yancy and Raleigh disobey Stackerâs order to stay back, and Yancy gets dead (and itâs not clear that they actually manage to save the dudes on the ship). Â Chuck and Herc disobey the order to stay back because theyâre trying to save the other Jaeger pilots, which they not only fail to do, but they get hit with an EMP pulse from the kaiju. Â If Mako and Raleigh donât arrive when they do, both it wouldâve been a long, long fall into water for two Aussie pilots, and the world would have been well and truly fucked. Â
The movie underscores this with what I consider to be the goddamn climax of the whole thing. Â I mean, whatâs the biggest command that Stacker gives? Â Like, the single biggest one? Â
To me, itâs gotta be when he tells Mako (Mako! Specifically!) during Pitfall that she can do this. She can finish it.  And Mako does it, even though it clearly fucking costs her not to try and go to Strikerâs aid, even though it isnât phrased as an order.  Stacker knows he doesnât have to phrase it that way, because he knows that he has been Makoâs fixed point since she was ten years old.  He knows that she knows what should happen.  And he knows that he is right.  And that Mako agrees, too, because again: fixed point for how many years now?  The command doesnât need to be verbalized as such.  It doesnât even need to be entirely articulated, because the Drift that Mako and Stacker share isnât a physical one inside a Jaeger with a Pons mechanism.  Instead, it exists because Stacker and Mako found each other in the wreckage of Tokyo.  Stacker raised Mako, and they share the same value system and the same way of looking at the world and the same fierce pride and devotion and willingness to lay down personal attachments to other lives if it means saving the motherfucking world. Â
Thatâs their Drift. Â
So Stacker tells Mako that she can make this sacrifice â his life, for the world. Â Itâs a parallel to the situation that Yancy and Raleigh have to make in Alaska, with the fishermen versus the city of two million, and the one that Herc and Chuck have in Hong Kong, with the lives of their fellow Rangers versus one of the few great coastal cities left. Â Yancy and Raleigh and Herc and Chuck choose to disobey, and each time, not only does it not get them what they want, but itâs got shitty consequences.
This time, instead of laying it down as an order, Stacker tells Mako that she can finish it. Â Sheâll always be able to find in him in their particular version of the Drift. Â
And Mako obeys because she agrees with him. Â
And they save the world. Â
Let me emphasize that: the world gets saved without further loss of life because Mako and Raleigh follow Stackerâs directive to Mako.Â
Stacker fucking Pentecost, everyone. Â This fucking movie, everyone.Â
That last gesture is completely, âSwallow your pride, child, because lives are too important for this petty bullshit.â And when Raleigh says âYes, sir,â the matter is over.
Struck by tragedy.
