The deeper I got into writing, the more obvious it became that trying to force this story into two books meant sacrificing the very things that make it Eight of Swords: the slow-burn relationships, the psychological horror, the impossible choices, the quieter character moments that lead to the gradual descent into something much darker than I'd originally imagined.

So...

Eight of Swords is officially becoming a trilogy.

That means the story gets the space it deserves to go harder, the characters get to breathe, and live on the page and beyond. The relationships get to unravel, deepen and evolve naturally instead of racing towards the finish line. There's an especially big reason for this but I won't spoil it! Three books gives me the room to explore ideas I simply wouldn't have had room for otherwise.

The plan is currently:

So in the Azcast you mentioned how you pity Eddie the most and at first I was like, but Steve?? And then you said something along the lines of how exhausting it would be being in Eddie’s mind and then I was like…well yeah, Steve can push all his trauma down and box it all up and he has little Steve and this new other Steve to take over when it’s all too much, which Eddie doesn’t have. And it had me thinking if Eddie were to have his own version of a little Eddie or an “other” Eddie to take over when everything becomes too much, what do you think that persona would be like? Or even what time period would Eddie revert back to that would make him feel safe?

Not that I think it would happen because Eddie is all about control but everyone has a breaking point, right? (Now I’m just having fun thinking of Steve coming home to an innocent childlike version of Eddie) and I also love the symmetry and how in your fics they always have to match. But anyway….

My other thought is about Billy and Eddie and their scenes alone together (I’m so very excited for more of this in part 3). We know Billy hates Eddie with everything in him and we know Eddie kinda loves Billy in this twisted way. And you spoke about the whole cult leader thing and how people respond to them and also how Eddie turned Robin to be on his side. What would it take for Eddie to turn Billy onto his side? And I know it would be A LOT and probably would never ever happen. But it’s a fun thought!!

I absolutely love the idea of Eddie having his own version of Little Steve, a regressive coping mechanism! I think if he did, and it wasn't just his snakes, it would be him at a very young age, younger than Little Steve even, probably the mental age he was during the Dirt Road event. I don't think he's ever really felt safe until he was able to make his own safety himself but I think he was especially confident at around seventeen years old and felt very much master of the universe then, among other times.

Now, what would it take for Eddie to turn Billy onto his side?? Oh this is delicious because the automatic answer is NOTHING. Billy's hatred once set is for life, he's not fluid or adaptable like Eddie is, he doesn't forgive or forget, he's resentful and mean and single-minded about revenge. HOWEVER, Eddie could manipulate him into it if he so desired by using Steve, and by offering Billy what he wants, i.e revenge on him, get Steve back etc... plus a few other sneaky ways Billy wouldnt understand until it was too late. Eddie's obsession with Billy is so destructive for them both and there is genuinely a part of Eddie that loves Billy, terrifying as that is. Of them both, Billy has the more rational, practical mindset but he's suspecible to Eddie's manipulation so WE SHALL SEE!!
