Bro, i keep thinking about your choice to use a fig tree for your fic. It's like i want to find meaning in it but can't quite put my finger on it. 😅
Ofc there is the fig tree analogy but that doesn't fit at all for the guys whose defining thing is not having a choice over determining their future.
I was maybe thinking about the parable of the barren fig tree? (Luke 13:6–9) It's a lot more ambiguous and has different denominations argue about it still. Even so, it would probably apply more to the Last Tree on Eden, not to the seed itself.
There is, however, a kind of fig tree doesn't need pollination and bears fruit all on its own which has insane potential for symbolism, i mean it's basically an immaculate birth atp. Ultimate sign of hope for humanity (and something to die for their sins) (and also: Mary). Idk im just rambling here, but can you see what I'm seeing?? Religious parallels in stories drive me crazy. Did you have any reasons for choosing it?
Thank you for this ask because I've been itching to talk about the fig tree! Though Bible and Christian symbolisms weren't exactly what led to use a fig tree (sorry)
The fig tree I had in mind was this:
Known commonly as Pipal trees or Bodhi trees. Scientific name: Ficus religiosa. It's considered sacred in both buddhism and hinduism(which i grew up with). I was particularly inspired by one of the stories which claims that the roots grow upwards and the branches grow down which likely refers to the tree growing ariel roots which turn into secondary trunks to support its massive weight. You think you can see it in the picture too. Just how fuckin cool is that.
Also Buddha supposedly gained enlightenment under that tree!!
And yes, while I considered just a fig tree because of its general passing mentions in the bible, i chose this specifically because of it's nature of growing through everything.
I live in a place where these are native and found all over. You will see it's root break concrete and swallow temples/buildings whole. It is highly invasive and can grow just about everywhere. I've seen sprouts on roofs and people having to rip it out so it doesn't destroy the whole building. They take root steadily and stay there stubbornly. The oldest one they've found is over a thousand year old! Also look at the leaves! They're heart shaped!!
It's stubborn and imposing and honestly in the night, so freaking scary looking. But it's worshipped and treated with a lot of care. Cutting it down is frowned up and often times, sitting areas and community spaces are built around it.
With its massive canopy, ariel roots and it's ability to stubbornly live, why wouldn't Eden, with it's world plunged in darkness, worship it? Why wouldn't they think a tree like this is divine and something worth dying for?
So, yeah :) that's why i chose a fig. Especially this one <3
