Me, after coming out of a decade of depression
Abortion isnāt the lesser of two evilsāit is a just and good thing.
Abortion isnāt the lesser of two evilsāit is a just and good thing. So says Reverend Katherine Ragsdale:
Letās be very clear about this: when a woman finds herself pregnant due to violence and chooses an abortion, it is the violence that is the tragedy; the abortion is a blessing.
When a woman finds that the fetus she is carrying has anomalies incompatible with life, that it will not live and that she requires an abortion ā often a late-term abortion ā to protect her life, her health, or her fertility, it is the shattering of her hopes and dreams for that pregnancy that is the tragedy; the abortion is a blessing.
When a woman wants a child but canāt afford one because she hasnāt the education necessary for a sustainable job, or access to health care, or day care, or adequate food, it is the abysmal priorities of our nation, the lack of social supports, the absence of justice that are the tragedies; the abortion is a blessing.
And when a woman becomes pregnant within a loving, supportive, respectful relationship; has every option open to her; decides she does not wish to bear a child; and has access to a safe, affordable abortion ā there is not a tragedy in sight ā only blessing. The ability to enjoy Godās good gift of sexuality without compromising oneās education, lifeās work, or ability to put to use Godās gifts and call is simply blessing.
These are the two things I want you, please, to remember ā abortion is a blessing and our work is not done. Let me hear you say it: abortion is a blessing and our work is not done. Abortion is a blessing and our work is not done. Abortion is a blessing and our work is not done.
What really impresses me about Ragsdale is this bit:
The idea that abortion kills a child, she contends, reflects parental hopes and dreams for the child-to-be, not the reality of what the zygote or fetus actually is. (It is, in her words, āproleptic,ā a theological term for anticipated realities that come to be treated as extant in the here and now.) When pro-choice forces signal their partial acceptance of the abortion-as-child-murder idea, says Ragsdale ā which they do when they speak of the ātragedyā of abortion ā they may be motivated by political concerns, or by a desire to be respectful and conciliatory. But in the process, theyāre ceding precious intellectual ground to abortion opponents, and backing themselves into a tactical corner: how, after all, can you effectively defend something for which youāre simultaneously apologizing?
Whatās more, theyāre also increasing the likelihood that women who do choose to have abortions will spend their lives tormented by needless guilt. āI suppose itās possible for an intelligent, faithful person to still believe that thereās no moral difference between a zygote and a baby,ā Ragsdale allows. āBut thereās no reason for most of us to believe that. And I donāt.ā
ā¦āIf you want a baby,ā says Ragsdale, āand youāve decorated the nursery, and bought the toys, and named the baby ā and then they discover the babyās organs are growing outside the body, and not only will the baby not survive, but the woman will be torn up trying to deliver it ā thereās a tragedy. But the tragedy isnāt the abortion ā the tragedy is that you needed one.
I know this wonāt convince the hardcore anti-abortionists, but it refreshing to see someone refusing to cede the moral high ground.
I canāt think of a better day for this message.
this is what i came here for

Every day I handle more money than I will ever make. Every day.
At the start of my employment, my boss showed me videos of people stealing, and we both had a chuckle about it. How silly they were! There was a camera overhead, and itās not to watch the shoppers. See, we canāt actually stop shoplifters. They get away with it maybe nine out of ten times. But we, who are watched and tallied and witnessed? We are always caught.
At first it was hard to hold one hundred dollars bills. An amount I had never seen before. An amount that didnāt exist in my household. Itās normal now. Here is something that is not for me.
āWhat the hell, Iāll take another,ā says the man, pondering our 200 dollar watches. What the hell. Total comes to 580 and not even a flinch in his face. I have been working for 11 hours today and made only 110 dollars. It will go to my rent. Today I work for free, it feels. When I get my check, I will have 35 dollars left for food and saving.
The six hundreds he hands me go into the cash register. For a moment, I imagine having money. Then I put it away, counting out his change.
I know for a fact we sell our products for double what they are worth. That I could be making commission. That they could hand me those 580 dollars and change my life and not even mark the difference in their checkbooks. Heās not the only sale they make today, but I am the reason they made it. Heās not the only one spending 600 dollars, but if I hadnāt spent two hours with him telling me about his life, he wouldnāt have spent any. I go home. I donāt own a watch.
I have watched and rewatched a video on how to make salmon four ways. My shopping list is always the same. Pasta. Rice. Tuna. If I can afford butter it was a good week. I dream of the world I will never walk in, where I can throw the best fish fillet in the cart with a shrug. I hold hundreds in my hand and look up at the camera. I put them under the cash drawer.
I go to work. I scrap together my savings. I eat my bowl of rice slowly. My manager takes a paid week off from work just for his birthday. He owns a yacht.Ā
Iām not worth the cost of a watch.
